Math Reaction Pi
LESSON 1 REFLECTION It is important to critically analyze questions such as, what is pi? , And what is the area of a circle? The obvious assumptions would be the numerical approximation 3.14 and the formula of the area of a circle, pi*r^2. However, as we soon learned Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter or the number of radius squares needed to completely cover a circle exactly. And the area of a circle is the unit squares needed to cover a circle exactly, or the space inside the boundaries of a circle. Such revelations prompted the lessons that were soon to follow. All these lessons had one common factor; they focused on a unit centered on a circle. Lesson one was a common lecture in which the teacher used examples and taught the lesson by simply stating the facts on the board and asking the students to practice. Lesson two was based on interaction. Students learned by watching and interacting with manipulatives that a parallelogram formed from pieces of a circle has the area calculated by Pi*r*r which is Pi*r^2. Lesson three focused on the guess and check attempt. Students were asked to find their own ways to approximate the area of a given circle without using the formula. Finally lesson four was investigative, students were given radius squares and asked to discover the area of a circle using fractions.
Lesson one and three might have not been my ideal vision of a lesson I would teach, however, lesson two and four inspired me. Lesson two and four were interesting to me because I learned something new in each approach. I used my previous knowledge to solve a new problem. While lesson one was too boring for me to sit through, and lesson four was open-ended and I did not quite understand the point of the lesson.
After we broke into groups and began discussing these lesson, I learned my two favorite lessons might not be the most suited for a student centered classroom that I would hope to achieve. I learned that in

I would introduce the concept of surface area of a cube to 5th and 6th grade students by starting off the lesson with a visual representation. I would place a picture of a cube at the front of the class and explain to students that all sides are equal. I would take out a ruler and measure the sides so that students understand that the sides are equal. The picture would be as follows:…

The science lesson was on the water cycle. This was a great lesson to observe. The teacher read from the text book a brief description of this process. The students were not as interested in this aspect of the lesson. The teacher then showed some great video that allowed the students to see the process. The students enjoyed the interaction with great technology and with each other. The teacher did a wonderful job of incorporating other content areas that the students were learning. There was an emphasis on literacy and on comprehending the content (Carin, 2009).…

My Instructor, help open up our minds and push us to answer questions that we might not have thought about, that called for us to do additional research to gain a better understanding of our research, and this learners classmates help to make the experience more of and enjoyment than a pain. They were able to do this by helping this learner feel ok about her long drawn out reports. Every time this learner thought she missed the point for the discussion, they help me to feel reassure that I was on the right track. They added to this learner report my interjecting their thoughts, they were polite and they examine this learner’s work. π is an irrational number, which means that its value cannot be expressed exactly as a fraction m/n, where m and n are integers. Consequently, its decimal representation never ends or repeats. It is also a transcendental number, which implies, among other things, that no finite sequence of algebraic operations on integers (powers, roots, sums, etc.) can be equal to its value; proving this was a late achievement in mathematical history and a significant result of 19th century German mathematics. Throughout the history of mathematics, there has been much effort to determine π more accurately and to understand its nature; fascination with the number has even carried over into non-mathematical culture.…

Numerical approximations for pi also heavily featured geometry in an otherwise arithmetic branch of mathematics. Pi itself is a constant, unlikely, one would think, to have anything remotely to do with geometry. But attempts to find and approximate the value of pi have used geometry. Ptolemy of Alexandria used a 360 sided polygon inscribed within a circle to arrive at an estimate for pi that was very accurate for his time.…
