To begin with, Tom’s ability to care for his family and friends depicts his maturity. Tom displays his first act of caring when he comes home late at night. Tom wakes up next morning and finds Aunt Polly crying. Tom cries right after and “pleaded for forgiveness, promised to reform…” (76). Tom shows that he cares and does not want his aunt to cry over him. He understands the pain he causes to Aunt Polly and wants to reform. Tom also shows caring when he “sneaks” back home. Tom demonstrates the aspect of leadership to Becky in a hopeless situation. For example, “Tom took Becky's candle and blew it out ... Becky understood, and her hope died again. She knew that Tom had a whole candle and three or four pieces in his pockets…” (202). Tom takes full action and takes control of the situation. He makes a plan ahead of time, so their future would be secure. However, Tom has another characteristics of a leader.
