The poem I choose to write about is “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. The reason why I choose this poem over the others is because it really puts on display her courage, and strength even throughout her very grim life. Maya instills the mood of the poem by using many literary devices. The mood of the poem is empowerment, and strength even through anything you may possible be going through. A simile she used in the poem was in the third stanza, where she says “ Just like moons and like suns, With certainty of tides. Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise.” What I interpreted her saying was, no matter how low she may be, or even be at rock bottom she still will come back to the top. I liked how she used the moon and the sun as an example, just for the sole reason everyone knows how the suns rises and sets everyday. I personally like this stanza the best just because of her optimism. It really shows how she has courage in herself. I’m sure everyone can connect to this stanza. Maya uses repetition with the word “Rise” to show that she has gotten over and risen above racism. In the stanza where she says, “you may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust ill rise” it stresses to the reader one of the main points in the poem, that no matter how unfair people will treat her because of her skin, she will let them bring her down and will stand up against them. The main point in that line is the rising dust. For dust to rise, it must be messed with from the ground for it to leave and rise, which represents Maya’s overcoming of racism. Her enemies, on the floor and because they have “unsettled” her by treating her wrong, she choose to stay strong which is her rising above them all, going against racism. The way she uses repetition is also used Maya, repeats the words “I rise” more than 4 times in the last part. This stresses the theme of the poem, letting us know what she was trying to say in the

I believe everyone agrees with Maya Angelou. I, for one, can accept my own death, however I can’t accept the death of my mom, dad, sisters, or any loved ones. I think it’s the same for everyone. It’s true that if we are so angered by the death of a loved one it will lead to our death, perhaps by depression.…

Maya Angelou’s style is very intriguing and captivating due to her usage of tone. Maya Angelou was an American Civil Rights Activist, born in St Louis, Missouri, who lived through the Jim Crow Era - which, as mentioned before, was a critical period in terms of the rise of racial segregation in the United States. Unlike the majority of her kind, Angelou was extremely privileged - becoming a successful actress, author and poet. Although she is privileged and considerably well-off in her own personal endeavors, she is fully aware of the atrocity and inhumanity with which her fellow folk are being treated with on a daily basis. In the poem, she decants and expresses her frustration, but she does so with great subtlety and restraint. Although she uses a confrontational tone (by using the pronoun ‘you’) towards white people (which is the intended audience of the poem), she does not personally attack them in any way. She simply poses rhetorical questions which make the audience re-evaluate their way of thinking and cause them to truly see that their beliefs are founded upon hatred and false accusations. Aside from using a confrontational tone, Angelou also makes use of a perseverant tone which, through close analysis, entails a valuable message for people from all walks of life and, more importantly, the black folk who suffer from racial discrimination. “...I rise..”…

The Poem I have chosen is Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou. I chose this poem because it not only emphasizes the pressures society places on women but how one may overcome them. The poem helps recognize that one does not need only the stereotypical beauty that society portrays in order to feel confident. The begging of the poem begins almost in a reverse fashion, with a pretty women asking a potentially "normal" women where her secret to happiness lies.…
