On May 15, 2017 I Interviewed Olivia Zamora about what It means to be American to her. She comes from a humble family. When she was 17 she arrived to America, where she would work to provide a good living for her family. Growing up in Mexico compared to the United states was different for her, as she didn’t know the language, streets, or the people. She had to face very difficult decisions, where it would change her life completely and let go of people she deeply cared about. Olivia, is very open minded and respects everyone no matter the color skin, race, religion, and beliefs.…
Sylvia Rivera, a well known activist and drag queen present at the Stonewall Inn spoke of the typical raids that gay bars faced,“The routine was that the cops get their payoff, they confiscate the liquor… A padlock would go on the door. What we did, back then, was disappear to a coffee shop or any place in the neighborhood for fifteen minutes. You come back, the Mafia was there cutting the padlock off, bringing in more liquor, and back to business as usual” (Rivera). On the night of June 28th, 1969, the police raided the Stonewall Inn, and arrested 13. The raid in Stonewall was not new; the police raided Stonewall regularly, and patrons normally complied. Sojourner Truth once declared, at the Women’s Rights Convention in 1851, “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these together ought to be able to turn it back and get it right side up again” (“Sojourner Truth” Encyclopedia). This statement brought a wave of protest from the men in the crowd and left most women with renewed hope for receiving equal rights. Sojourner Truth was a woman’s rights activist and African American abolitionist, on top of being a freed slave. Sojourner Truth had the “worst of both worlds” being that she was African American, and also a woman. She spoke at a countless amount of conventions, largely inspired by Lucrietta Mott. Rather than using weapons, Truth would use her incredible talent of speech to get her points across. Truth was an extremely opinionated woman who would not give up on an issue until she thought the result was satisfactory. Without Sojourner Truth’s hard work and dedication to the issues that she cared about, America would not be shaped today how it is (“Sojourner Truth” Encyclopedia).…
“If my cup won’t hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn’t you be mean not to let me have my little half measure full? (National Park Service- Sojourner Truth)... this small passage was taken from a speech that has been repeated throughout time. The woman who spoke these words was known as Sojourner Truth.
