The conclusion drawn by Keith Hess in “Sure It’s Aliiiive, but Does It have a Sooooul?” is that we are non-physical beings. He best proves this point when saying that the Monster recreated its self to have a better body, much like our bodies do every day with the breakdown, repair and creation of new cells. In the third section of this paper, I argue that the author is correct and that we as humans or monsters are non-physical beings.…
In chapter 1 of “Dude You’re A Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School,” the author mentions that “one of the ways a queer theory approach can bring studies of masculinity in line with other feminist theorizing is to uncouple the male body from definitions of masculinity.” What he means by “uncouple the male body from definitions of masculinity” is that the word male is normally associated with masculinity and in order to fully understand these theories we must stop genderizing the word masculinity. Instead, we must see masculinity as an organizing principle of social life (Pascue). It is important to decu…
In Janelle Monáe’s “Hell You Talmbout” she talks about people living in poverty. She first starts with the first verse saying that in poverty there is a lot of violence, from bombs being thrown, guns being pulled out, and a body lying on the streets from police brutality. In the chorus she repeats “Now what the hell you talking ‘bout?” this could be seen as Janelle speaking to an outsider who does not see all the violence and poverty, while those who live in those conditions experience it every day. In the second verse, Janelle addresses the topic of how fast drugs are traveling in poverty and how they are stealing from one another to get money for drugs. In the line “the poor man eats off of the rich men’s dollar,” Janelle refers to how many…
The article, “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch,” by Ann Hodgman was one of the weirdest and most confusing articles I have ever read. I realized the word bitch, in the title, was linked to the meaning female dog only after I was halfway through the article. It also took me half the article to understand that Hodgman was literally eating a variety of dog food. She sounds like quite an adventurous lady compared to myself. I would never think of trying dog food under any circumstances.…
Jim having a negative self-concept is really bothering him. While his dad is telling him he isn’t trying hard enough he actually thinks that no matter how hard he does study he still wont do well.…
The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald makes trouble now seem a little less worrisome. Gatsby, the main character, must deal with war, betrayal of love, and illegal acts. Nick Carraway, the narrator, takes the reader on a journey not only through the novel but also his own life. He starts by saying that his father taught him to never hold people to the personal standards of one's self in fear of misinterpreting the person as a whole. This advice is carried throughout the novel and is by far one of the most notable aspects within the story. The Great Gatsby is a delicately written story of a young man trying to fight his way through the 1920’s with the issues of prohibition, which lead into organized crime, and the forthcoming of the second industrial…
Edgar Allan Poe had written many poems from The Raven to El Dorado and Lenore to Alone, though they have similar themes they are never quite the same. Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, his parents died before he was old enough to really know them and he went to boarding school. On top of that he had a gambling problem when he was younger, but there is always a silver lining. “Poe’s father and mother, both professional actors, died before the poet was three years old”(poets.org). Edgar Allan Poe has changed the world of poetry forever.…
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." Matthew 5:7. Whether they give it or receive it, people will always need mercy. Love is a prerequisite of mercy. Forgiveness connects people in ways that might benefit all concerned because if people can forgive each other for their mistakes, they offer mercy to each other. Trust results from showing mercy. If people can trust one another, then they can show mercy in different aspects of other people's lives. Mrs. Luella in "Thank you Ma'am" and Sherlock Holmes in "The Blue Carbuncle" both give mercy to someone they did not even know because they overflow with love, forgiveness, and trust.…

The only entity fast food restaurants desire is money. They do not care about health, weight, or medical problems. Fast food is everywhere, also “ there are more than 160,000 fast food restaurants in America. More than fifty million customers are served per day” (Zinczenko 464). These statistics are outrageous and embarrassing for Americans. The food these companies produce is horrible in nutrition and damaging for one’s health. Even though fast food is tempting, one should stay far away from it as possible. In David Zinczenko article “Don’t Blame the Eater,” he has his own personal experience as an example for people, specifically teenagers, to stay away from fast food. Although fast food produces delicious products, these products contain blinding nutrition facts, and the companies mainly target teenagers.…
This quote is long, but includes many factors that make it so inspiring. The first sentence is my favorite part of the quote because it makes one of the best points. With a great use of vocabulary, it explains how the hardest trails lead to the best views. The main reason that this part speaks to me is because one of my favorite hobbies is hiking. In my experience, the hardest hikes always lead to the most divine views. That doesn’t only apply to hiking, however. Working hard in school and other activities always ends well. I like it because it shows how the beginning may be the hardest segment, but it will always lead to an excellent reward.…
Social imagination, “individual problems are to social problems, what is happening outside of one’s personal control. This relationship between individual experiences and public issues is the sociological imagination” (Our Social World Pg9). The book that we read “Gang Leader for a Day” by Sudhir Vankatesh clearly illustrates the sociological imagination. In the early part of the book we see Vankatesh trying to give surveys to a gang to try to understand how they feel about their lives in poverty. The rest of society sees Gang Members as a problem because of the drug trafficking and other illegal activities. When Vankatesh continues to interact with the gang we start to see things from the outside looking in. These…
