Mayor Seidenberg's Remain Silent
I suggest Mayor Seidenberg remain silent because it creates better economy and brighter future, although the statement from Fornshell Chemical may not be true.
Remain Silent keeps the town in better shape. As the document states, Fornshell Chemical could shrink the size of their factory or relocate if Mayor Seidenberg expose the matter, which could lead to a economical downfall in near future, returning the city to previous conditions, with poor economy along with decaying education system and raising crime rate. (Larson P.1-2) While going forward may be seen as a virtue in common eyes, based on Machiavelli’s statement, it could result in ruin-the possible downfall of the city; on the other hand, actions which are considered vice-keeping silent and reporting, can

(Machiavelli P. 74-75) In this case, it is exactly the mayor should do. Being trustworthy and humane, she should report to the city prosecutor and fight for the right of the family impacted, however, she will lose her job and the city’s future if she chooses to act in such manner. Based on above paragraph, it’s safe to conclude that the town will suffer from economical impact if the company were to leave, creating social issues that would further impact the future of the city. Also, though the pollution-impacted area was small and people were few (Larson P.1-2), she may still lose her job based on reason beside economical impact. When Fornshell Chemical tampered with the result of the inquiry, she did not see through, and later on when she does, the pollution might have caused more harm to citizens, and it was her oversight that resulted such. People would doubt her leadership, causing the mayor to lose her position, leaving the town with no bright future with poor economics and unstable government that may not have far-sight administration. First, the company that is moving into an area specializes in computer parts. Other companies which struggled with job losses were in the textile field. There is a possibility that computer parts manufacturing plant has better chances of succeeding in that town than textile company. So why not? I don’t think this is unethical. Especially, if new jobs will be created in a small town that was hit hard with job losses. Community will benefit if there are new job opportunities.…

In Company Q’s case some business decisions need to be re-analyzed in order to ensure they are meeting their goals, as well as being socially responsible. Company Q is a small locally owned Company that has decided to close down stores in higher-crime-rate areas of the city due to the stores reportedly losing money. Another issue is that it took many years of insisting by the customers to get health-conscience and organic goods in due to worries by the company about high cost margins. They have also turned down opportunities to donate day-old products to the local food banks because they are worried about lost revenues and fraud. The current attituds and decisions seem to be based on the bottom line and profitability of the company rather than the best interests of the community and their customers. If these decisions are not evaluated and changed the company could ultimately lose their business to a more responsive competitor.…

Each of the businesses would have an impact on water and air pollution, which impacts the health of the residents, as well as the surrounding environment. The warehouse company would bring in more truck traffic and emissions to Sparksville. Emissions are a nonpoint source of pollution into the air, and also leads to the water from the acid rain from the effects of the emissions. Although the warehouse is small in nature, it would still have an effect on the water pollution because of sewage. Sewage would be a point source pollutant because it is coming from one particular area, similar to the car company. The hybrid car manufacturing company would also lead to more air pollution because of the trucks or train that would bring in parts, as well as emissions from the added traffic. The traffic would be a nonpoint source pollutant, similar to warehouse truck emissions, but even more so from the added traffic, and also related to how the traffic would be with the oil refinery. The car company is also a larger company that would have to deal with waste on their own, which would be a point source of pollution into the water, which also works similarly to the oil refinery. Although the oil refinery will have regular waste, that waste may also include chemical waste from the oil that is entered into the water system. Overall, each of the…

Manchester is a city in England that experienced tremendous growth between the 1750’s and 1850’s. The population grew from 18,000 in 1750 to over 300,000 by the census of 1851. This growth called for more homes and factories to be built in order to support the growing population. With the constructing of more factories to support the rise in population came the growth of industry and manufacturing. The growth of the city, along with these factories, brought about several issues other than the manufacturing of valuable goods. The overcrowding from the population growth and the smog, smoke, and other toxic waste from the factories brought about the issue of pollution and bad living conditions. Pollution and the horrible quality of living was a prevalent issue because it brought about disease and death. Also, with a growing population comes a larger demand for products. The city was forced to manufacture more items so that it could provide for more men. In order for all of these products to be made, men needed to work longer than they should on lower pay in places which the products fouled the breathing air. This issue of bad working conditions led to starvation, sickness, poverty, and death. Because of the growth of Manchester, the issues of manufacturing and industrial growth, pollution of the living areas, and bad working conditions were raised. While the issue of the growth of manufacturing and industry was looked upon with esteem, the issues of the pollution of living areas and bad working conditions received reactions of disgust.…

Exxon/Mobil, one of the nation's leading oil producers, has its main refinery located in Beaumont, Texas. Each year, the residents of Beaumont/Port Arthur have to contend with the 39,000 pounds of pollution spewed each year by the Exxon refinery. Exxon's emissions are 385% above the state refinery average. In 1999, the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Committee (TNRCC) allowed the plant to increase their emissions, without allowing the public to have a say in the matter. Interestingly, 95% of the people living near the plant are of African American descent and are in the poverty range. Some believe that this, along with the lack of education in the area, allows Exxon to get away with such high emissions. Residents in nearby neighborhoods have been complaining of headaches, nausea, eye, and throat irritation for years. Since 1997, Mobil has repeatedly violated health standards in its emissions of two key air pollutants: sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, These "rotten egg" smells are so strong, one can smell it through a car driving past the refinery. After numerous complaints and one record of a refinery worker becoming unconscious because of the fumes, the EPA awarded Exxon with a $100,000 environmental justice grant in October of 1998. Hopefully, Exxon has put the money to good use and cleaned up their emissions.…

The election of 1860 was among four candidates: John Breckenridge, a Democrat, John Bell, Constitutional Union Party, Stephen Douglas, a Democrat, and Abraham Lincoln, a Republican from the North. When election day came and all votes were in Douglas had twelve electoral votes, Bell had thirty-nine, Breckenridge with seventy-two, and in the lead, Lincoln had 180 electoral votes (Peters and Woolley). Lincoln had won the election, but he had not won everything yet. The South would succeed into a new country called the Confederates and start a war over slavery. Lincoln would need some help to win the war, but what could give him the advantage? The solution were three new inventions. While many innovations were…

The meeting progressed as one of the council members stated that there were three speakers that day and they each had no more than six minutes to speak. The first person to speak was a man named Andrew Whitmore. He is the HOA (Home Owner Association) president and vice president of the executive board. He addressed the issue he had with the lots in the Brookhaven subdivision. He was upset that the city of Fairburn didn’t ask the Home Owner Association about their view on taking home lots away. He asked questions like, “Who gets the benefit? Where is the partnership of the city and the Home Owner Association?” As his six minutes were coming to an end, he stated, “Investors come and go. We are here for the long run.” After he was done speaking, a council member told him that he would get a statement back in writing.…

The people of New York have the right to enjoy an environment that is conducive to the full development of individuals as human beings. This is an environment that is not only free from obvious threats of physical harm such as crimes but also from concealed threats that have long term effects on human health and functioning such as air pollution. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the New York City government to improve ambient air quality in New York through pollutant level monitoring, air pollution clearly remains a major threat to the people’s health. (NYSDEC, 2008) Industrial and vehicle emissions continue to be the main source of air pollution in the city, which in turn exposes the people to greater risks of contracting diseases from air-borne pollutants and carcinogens. (Routledge, et. al. 1383) Thus, there is a need not only for strengthening existing air pollution-control methods and legislation but in making them more effective by encouraging public participation to solve the problem.…
