Since organizations can be viewed as systems, management can also be defined as human action, including design, to facilitate the production of useful outcomes from a system.
According to Harold Koontz, “Management is an art of getting things done through and with people in formally organised groups. It is an art of creating an environment in which people can perform as individuals and can co-operate towards the attainment of group goals”. According to F.W. Taylor,
“Management is an art of knowing what to do, when to do, and see that it is done in the best and cheapest way”.
Principles of management by Henri Fayol:
There are fourteen principles of management which are defined by Henri Fayol given below:
1. Division of labour
When the major tasks and activities of the organisation is divided and carried out by different people in the organisation it is called division of labour.
2. Authority and responsibility coexist
The concepts of Authority and responsibility are closely related. Authority was defined by Fayol as the right to give orders and the power to exact obedience. Responsibility involves being accountable, and is therefore naturally associated with authority. Whoever assumes authority also assumes responsibility.
3. Unity of command
This means that one person should report to only one boss. This principle has undergone considerable changes, and we now have ideas like adhocracy or matrix organisations where a person may report to multiple bosses.
