A wise leader is welcoming new members to his large and successful organization. He tells the group gathered for an orientation session, "Welcome! I am glad to welcome you to our team. Each of you investigated our group and found a reason to pursue joining us. Some of you are here because of the work we do; some because of the kind of people we are; some because you see an opportunity to use your talents and skills. Whatever your reason, you see a link between who you are and who we are. That is good—there should be a link. However, do not get comfortable with that, because it is all going to change. In five years, we likely will not look much like we do today, nor will you."
This leader was referring to the fact that he focuses on constant change and innovation in the organization. He told them that whatever they are doing that works today might not work tomorrow. Why does he do this? Because what works today—the strategies, policies, programs, and people—works because of today's conditions. Today's environmental conditions are composed of particular characteristics in the current economy, culture, technology, politics, and other factors. All of these factors are changing, though! The world of today is vastly different from the world 20, 10, and five years ago. And the world of five, 10, and 20 years into the future will be vastly different from today.
Leaders respond to the reality of a constantly changing world through the work of innovation. It is how leaders guide their organizations to be open to, sense, and prepare for future realities.
