It affected 2 lakh people within a 3km radius. One person died in the incident and many were hospitalized. This occurred during the pendency of the first petition requesting the closure of caustic chlorine plant on account of its hazardous nature.
On 6th December 1985, Delhi Administration passed an order directing Shriram to stop manufacturing and processing of hazardous chemicals.
Impact and Course of Action
This case took place soon after the Bhopal Gas tragedy and was keenly watched as an instance of how the courts would deal with the companies responsible for environmental disaster.
• During the pendency of petition filed by MC Mehta, this issue rocked the Indian Parliament and the Delhi Administration appointed an expert committee headed by Mr. Manmohan Singh. This committee submitted a detailed report to the Government outlining the various recommendations to minimize the hazards that complied with the pollution control and safety measures.
• The Court appointed “Nilay Singh Choudhary Committee” to ascertain whether the recommendations filed of Manmohan Singh Committee had been implemented in accordance with the pollution control and safety measure.
