Drug Addiction is defined as a dependence on an illegal drug or medication. The abuse and misuse of drugs has become such a problem on our society. People have many different reasons for becoming addicted to drugs. Peer pressure; stress at home, or at work, overdue bills, and some people just do it out of pure boredom. Also, in a lot of cases, people are prescribed narcotics by their doctors that can be detrimental to any person. People also start using drugs out of mere fun and pleasure and end up with a life full of addiction, misery, and pain. People also misuse over the counter drugs, which is another form of drug abuse. Drug addiction can not only cause problems within an addict’s home, but also in the streets of our society. People will do almost anything just to get their next high, such as lie, cheat, steal, and in some cases even kill to get their drugs or money for them. There are many ways that most of these situations can be resolved. I feel that drug programs should be offered immediately before jail time. A lot of people are sent to jail and then come home with the same addictions. Instead of judges giving harsh jail sentences to people for crimes involving drugs, they should make the violator get into inpatient treatment for at least 12 months. I also feel that each state should have at least 2 free inpatient drug treatment programs, because every family can’t afford to put their loved ones into treatment. When families have to come out of pocket to pay for their loved ones treatment it causes other problems within the home such as eviction, no electricity, no food, and many more problems. Aside from affecting families, drugs also affect businesses because addicts perform poorly on the job when they come to work under the influence. I feel the only way that these situations will get under control is if more people get involved and help. Also people with authority need to
