While attending the Girard Academic Music Program, initially for singing, I learned to play the trombone and was also taught music theory, how to read and write music, which only increased my love for music all the more. After getting a good grasp on the trombone I decided to pick up the trumpet and taught myself how to play that as well. Upon graduating high school I attended Eastern University where I studied music education and church music. Later, I transferred to Temple University and there I studied Jazz performance with a minor in music education.…

My sophomore year I was given a choice: Either continue in the solo classical piano I had played my whole life, or join jazz band and put effort into learning a new style of music. I chose jazz. The comping, sight-reading, and working with a group of people made jazz crazily different from classical. I loved it. I would listen to jazz for hours to discover how to make the keys sing like Count Basie and Oscar Peterson.…

Before I had even started high school I hit a very deep depression. I struggled with it for years. I felt I had no family and no friends. It was a very hard time for me. I didn't enjoy talking about my feelings or being around people due to the fact that I felt I just annoyed those around me. Despite this, I continued doing what I loved most: music. I began marching band my eighth grade year and loved the feeling of being on the field in the lights when our assistant band director would come over the loud speaker announcing the "McClain Marching Tigers and Tigerettes". It helped me find and accept who I am. I gained confidence and learned to lead and understand. It even introduced me to my closest friend whom introduced me to his friend group, giving me the first group of friends I had in my life. I've met so many new people and learned so many new skills throughout my marching career and I look forward to finishing out my senior year with the people who have been there with me from the beginning.…

Well, in my case, band has been the one thing I would look forward doing since I first witnessed my sister pick up her own flute and play her first tune. Band, in middle school, was a hobby that I truly treasured because it wasn’t your typical core class. This class, notably, enhanced the need to utilize my analytical skills, engage my mind, and run free with my covert musical self. After graduating middle school, starting marching band over the summer before my freshman year was my cloud of bewilderment. As the days passed, and the…

Starting off with the end of eighth grade year is when I realized how much my life would change after one decision. My small group of friends consisted of them being in band. I’ve always been a shy person when it comes to meeting new people which is why I never tried out. I remember seeing posters announcing to come try out for color guard which is a performing arts program during marching season in high school. I had a couple of friends who were convincing me to join since that would mean we would all be in band. My best decision was going to try out and making the team.…

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

In addition to playing in my high school's marching band, I played in concert band until I left for C-Tec. I wanted to continue on playing clarinet during the winter months in a group ensemble. I actually found that I enjoy playing in concert band, much more than marching band because of the greater opportunity for advancement. Through the process of auditioning, I have improved my range in addition to improving my technical musical ability. Through participating in concert band I discovered that I greatly enjoy playing classical style music in addition to movie music themes. Due to my past experiences in concert band I have decided to continue playing in a concert style band once I attend…

Being the kid that has no friends does have its perks though, like you always have time to do homework and you’re always reading so you seem to find out things you don’t learn in school. I do enjoy reading very much but my passion in life is music. I’ve grown up listening to all kinds of music, you name the genre and I most likely have listened to it before. My favorite style of music would have to be more of the alternative music, you know like the bands that most people haven’t heard of or don’t like. I don’t just listen to the music I also play an instrument, I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 10 and I still love it just as much as when I started. I’m not much of the singing type, I’m a bit tone deaf, the last time I sang in front of people I ran out of the room because when I finished they looked terrified. When…
