In the story, Franny and Zooey, we see numerous amount of little details like the fat lady or the cat with fleas. The biggest thing that we all tend to look over is the massive amount of hoarding that occurs in the story. Why do they do this? Is there a hidden meaning behind all of this? Perhaps the material clutter and hoarding in the Glass household represents the family being stuck in the past, but also Franny’s mind that's “hoarded” with thoughts, opinions and intellectual and spiritual confusion. This Glass family will also need some windex because their house is so messy. From previous scenes in Zooey’s chapter, we can see that the family has a hoarding problem. Their bathroom cabinet is full of empty bottles and old useless items. Their living room has objects that they don’t even need anymore such as a fish tank or dismantled ping pong tables. What does this all mean? Well according to the ADAA website , “Hoarding is the persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value... they feel it has sentimental value, is unique and irreplaceable,” What could be more sentimental than memories? She wants to have all of the memories and thoughts of him in her head. Along with memories, there plenty of thoughts and beliefs running through Franny’s head. It’s filled with thoughts about “phony people” , religious thoughts, debates if she’s really happy with lane and knowledge all in her head. The only thing wrong with this is that it’s all happening at the same time. It’s all mushed up together and put into one cluttered mind. Which sounds a lot like her house, right?
