Significant Place is a paper that was designed to show one’s ability to use descriptive and figurative language. This essays main purpose was to let the reader know about a significant place by using descriptions about what you see. In this essay I really focused on showing the reader what the surrounding were and not telling. My significant place was Otto’s Place in Galena. I chose this place because this is where I have spent the last four years working. I know a lot of the place and have been in there so much describing it would be easy. I picked Otto’s Place: A Hidden Gem, as the title because many people who have found it have been so impressed that with their food and atmosphere and wondered how they have never been there before. In…
Living in "the hood" in Weslaco,TX surrounded by my entire family was really a fundamental thing in my life. When i say entire, I mean literally all of us live a minute maybe two away from each other, and some of us were even neighbors. Now things are a little different and we may have scattered around all over Weslaco but we remain united and always available if one of us needed each other.…
The neighborhood that I chose to visit was Corona. I chose a specific area which is 111st. I used to live there and haven’t been around for about 5 years. I was very much attached to that part of corona because I lived there almost my whole childhood, my school was a few blocks away from my house and everything was convenient for me and my family. I lived there from the age of three to the age of thirteen.…
Growing up in Forrest City Arkansas, there was not much to do, fields for miles and not a chance at seeing a tree. But forty miles away, I could not say the same, the pearl of the Mississippi River, Memphis Tennessee. I spent a lot of time there growing up, just because there was not anything to do where I was from, and a whole lot to do in Memphis.…
Thinking back on it now, Alaska was an important part of my life, having lived there for the majority of the time I’ve been alive. The small town of Eagle River was a great place to live, even if it gets very cold in the winter. Since I’ve lived there for so long, I learned how to make my way around from Point A to Point B without much hassle and figured out how easily friends can come if you try. Where I lived in a neighborhood that wasn’t too far away from a safeway, so I could walk there and do some errands for my folks, and maybe do some shopping for myself as well. There was a park just across the way, which is where I spent most of my days if I wasn’t being a lazy nerd at my computer. If the summer wasn’t rainy, it…
That is right, the home that we dreaded but now missed. Throughout the rest of my childhood, I would spend my school years in northern Wisconsin and my summers in the Southside of Chicago. As I got older, I learned how lucky I was to have been able to experience both worlds. My cousins in the city were jealous we got to ride horses, milk cows, and ski in the winter. My friends in the country thought I was so lucky that I got to visit the Sears Tower every summer and knew of all the cool, trendy songs before the roller rink played them.…
There are copious elements that without a doubt have had a profound impact on myself, specifically being born in California. Numerous factors have a paramount influence on who you are, and for myself, the place I was born adequately peaks the list. Indeed, I can claim that being born in California exposes people to a vast number of cultures. Also, there is a certain slower pace of life. Additionally, the scenery, as well as weather, is extremely beautiful. California’s diverse population, laid back lifestyle, scenery and weather have all played a piece in shaping the person I am…
It was also the last place I saw my Grandmother Mary alive for the last time. We did not find out about the death until 5 months after, so this special place holds my last memories of her. Even after the death, my mother, sister and I continued the family tradition of going up and renting a cottage that the family has been staying in for years.…
It is a medium sized house on Bass Lake in Knox Indiana. I quickly learned that I had a real talent in practically all water sports. I can honestly tell you that there is no better feeling than laying out on the skis and just sucking in all the beautiful lake air. It was and has always always been my happy place, the place where my severe anxiety would just leave me alone. As I moved onto Middle School I found that I was no longer any good at baseball because I couldn't even see the ball. After my 7th grade year I discovered I also had a talent in a new Sport. My Love for running and Cross Country was really sparked at this point in my life. As a seventh grader I made the varsity squad found myself at the start line during the Indiana State meet. During the the grade I decided to give Football a try again. I was and will forever be the greatest season I've ever played, I enjoyed my team, they were my brothers. In the winter of 8th I found made the basketball team again but found that my love for the game was taken by the coach. I can honestly say he was my middle school bully because he ruined something that was truly special to…
Parsons, Kansas, the place I were born and raised. I had been out of town before and went to another city and state but none to where I was willing to move when I got older. A large part of my family lived here, and this is where all my friends were from. My family was very close and we always spent the holidays together, so It wasn’t as if I was all alone at any time. Every one I needed was no more than a five- block radius from each other, so I could visit and have a good time pretty much all the time. Most of the friends I made in school didn’t leave, so I really had no reason to move when I got older. I enjoyed the country and all it had to offer I could go fishing, ride horses and make mud pies pretty much all day with the kids and go to the bars at night with my friends and family. I really could find no reason to leave, I worked at nursing home and had a pretty nice duplex that I never want to leave. I knew my way around like the back of my hands I had explored that town over the last 25 years; I could make a road map myself. My family was always having some kind of gathering on the weekend that I couldn’t be bored.…

My parents bought a house in Evansville soon after they were married, and four years later they welcomed my brother Joshua into the family. I was born two and a half years later and I am the youngest, and tallest, granddaughter on both sides of my family. Just six months after I was born, my parents decided to move to the small rural town of Warrenton because my mom wanted us to grow up in a neighborhood filled with children just like she did. They loved the small town and the security it brought with it. My parents knew it would be a great place to raise a family.…
I challenged this “requirement” of my nonfiction last year in my piece “Little River Rocks.” I started arguably easy, with a memory from over eight years ago, but it was still a difficult topic for me. I originally wrote this about “home,” in this case the place I have felt most at home, and how I felt like I failed the memory of this. I’m proud of the elements of this, and how I made the assignment my own where I could. I have edited it since the assignment to turn it into a more “self discovery” piece, focussing the place within myself, and less on myself in the physical place. Some more strengths in this is my development of place and character, specifically in my own. There are also a lot of little message I include, showing instead of telling, very rarely jumping in as my current self to reflect and letting the symbolism and imagery do it for…
Sometimes you only have to visit a place once, to know whether or not, you will ever revisit that location. As for me that would be Mammoth Cave National Park in south central Kentucky when I was thirteen. That park remain to be one of the best places I have ever visited, the trip to it was a long one, due to the fact that we drove all the way their while making various stops at other locations.…
One favorite place from my childhood that I remember fondly is my grandparents' house. On one hand, its marvelous location is inforgettable to me. On the other hand, I have a lovely remembrance of all the funactivities my family and I did there. In adition, other memories include the delicious meals we enjoyed there.…
