A collaboration of short stories behind the scenes of an exciting era in American history. The author portrays many different point of views throughout the stories from the actual soldiers to the people who worked around the bases of Iraq and Afghanistan to the priests and chaplains that helped keep the soldiers sane. Though the book suffered slightly from its overuse of military jargon it flourished with great imagery and the clear, enjoyable voice. Also, the different point of views help correlate the different perspectives and at times touches upon Phil Klay’s personal connections to the book.…

Employers argue that qualifications are blurred by military terminology. While veterans admit to this blur, this terminology is all they have known for the past few years of their lives. It is a part of who they are and who they have become. When asked if he had a hard time explaining his resume, Brian Cannava, with NPR News, claimed, “I guess I really haven't tried explaining it….But to explain a deployment to somebody that hasn't deployed is...not going to be something that I would put on paper” (“Veterans Struggle”). Brian struggles to connect with employer’s needs, while they struggle to connect with his needs. Not only does this contribute to an endless circle of unemployment in veterans, but it also denotes military pride as negative. Veterans shouldn’t have to conform to be accepted into the civilian world. Employers seem to make no effort to bridge this disconnect between their heroes in real life, while a hero portrayed on TV is embraced and swarmed with adoration upon…

Steven Nardizzi (founder of Wounded Warrior Project) found a way of repaying his service without taking a step into the recruiter's office. Nardizzi says, “My father and uncle, both of whom served in World War 2, knew that I regretted not having served in the military”(2, Yeager). While attending law school in the mid 1990’s, Nardizzi started spending his days working for the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association or (EPAV)(2, Yeager). He intended to work at the association for three years until graduating. Later, he ended up becoming the associate…

Imagine a wounded man steadily limping towards a helicopter, and a trail of crimson liquid following him. He looks at the deep, scarlet gash on his leg as an excruciating pain jabbed him, as he thinks about his loved ones at home. This is what veteran’s face daily and we as Americans should ask ourselves, “How can we keep Lincoln’s promise to care for our veterans?” Using the authority of the government and the American people we can keep Lincoln’s oath of caring for our veterans and their families.
