The dissection went very well. I could definitely see the difference between an open circulatory system and a closed one. Even though it was also mushy inside, it was, in a way, more organized. Instantly, I noticed that finding the different organs and parts of the Perch was substantially easier than finding organs in past dissections. The video did not dissect the head of the perch so there were a couple of things that I couldn’t see: where the tongue was attached, the teeth, or parts of the brain (the medulla oblongata). I couldn’t feel the fins to tell what kind they were, but going by the video; the anterior dorsal fins, looked like rays; and the posterior dorsal, anal, pelvic, and caudal fins,…

There are many critical parts of the eye that help you see. There are many parts of the eye that help you interpret images: the cornea, lens, retina, iris, and optic nerve. The optic nerve takes in light from the retina and send it’s to the brain. When the eye first take parts at looking at light it goes straight to the cornea and aqueous humor which helps focus the image. Then it will go to the retina which will transmit the light to the optic nerve. From there the light is sent to the brain to…

Through the dissection of the fetal pig, we were able to compare and contrast the structure and functions of the organs to those of a human. We dissected the pig and observed all the exterior and interior structures. The fetal pig’s structure was almost identical to the human body. Since humans and pigs are both mammals, it can be very useful to study the fetal pig. We dissected the pig so that we should see the skeletal and organ structures that we learned about in class. Because pigs are also mammals, their structure is very similar to our own. By doing the dissection, we were able to physically see and touch the anatomy of the mammalian body rather seeing it solely in text form. This gives us a better idea of how the structures are intertwined to form the body as a whole.…

Leukemia: The condition of leukemia is when your bone marrow starts making abnormal white blood cells. Some of the symptoms include fever, headaches, joint pain, swollen spleen, and losing weight. To be diagnosed with leukemia, your white blood cells would be a high level and all the other blood cell levels would be lower then normal. The treatment for leukemia is chemotherapy( which uses medicine to kill the cancerous cells in the body), radiation (uses high dose of x-rays to kill the cancerous cells), stem cell transplant (rebuilds your supply of normal blood cells), biological therapy ( uses medicine to improve defenses from cancer). The prognosis of leukemia varies depending on how much of the body the cancerous cells have taken over. If the cancer is caught early then there is a good chance that if treated quickly the patient will survive but if not found till late stages of the disease then the chances of survival can be slim.…

After reading the book, Stiff, by Mary Roach. I’ve learned that human cadavers are not only used for donating organs to people that are in need. Human cadavers can be used by students who are training to be the next generations of surgeons. Cadavers are important to these students because it gives them a better understanding and perspective of working on real life patients than a computer would. During the early 1800’s, when it was illegal for people including medical students to dissect human cadavers. Students learned how to do surgeries and other medical procedures on poor patients that could not afford private doctors. These patients would end up dying from infections and many other reasons that could have been avoided if students were…
