“You’re transferring schools, Karina!”, my mother exclaimed a week before my sophomore year. Ultimately, this was the last thing I wanted to hear. I kept trying to decipher whether the news was good or bad. Moving to a Medical Magnet school smelled like defeat, and I was not fond of change. Public school was my forte. I was adapted to crowded lunch rooms, lively classes, and having classes such as art, band, up to ROTC. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but there was something hidden behind my personal chaos. Overall, this life-altering experience is what shaped me into the dedicated pupil and aspiring health care professional I am today.…
I am not your traditional medical school applicant. I do not have a 4.0 at a fancy big U nor have I helped helpless African children fight malaria, which is a goal of mine, but I digress. I did not make the best choices when I was younger and did not realize my full potential until the age of 21. I attended a semester at a party school when I was 18 and convinced myself school was not for me, when in fact, it was just an excuse to coast by. I never challenged myself at the awkward age 16-20 years old. I waited tables, worked in a warehouse, and did part time labor-intensive work to pay the rent and bills. I did enough just enough to get by. However, when I was 20, everything came into perspective. I was at a party having a great time with my best friend; I was in Louisiana at the time and as they say, “laissez les bon temps rouler”, translated, let the good times roll. That quickly changed. My best friend had a 5-minute long seizure, as everyone looked dumbfounded around him; I quickly took action, put him on his side and called 911. After a couple hours in the waiting room, two doctors…
Ben Carson's Speech at the National Press Luncheon Serenity Edwards Serenity School I dedicate this to Ben Carson Ben Carson's speech At the National Press Luncheon Ben Carson states," So what is it going to take to save our country. Courage!" (Carson, 2015). Ben Carson is an independent pediatric surgeon who is running for the years 2016- 2020 presidency. He is strong on what he believes and what he feels is right, and I agree with most of his beliefs.…
My clinical experiences, extracurricular activities, and working hard during my years in college to attain an excellent grade point average reflects my passion and abilities to succeed in medical school. As well as the skills that I acquired during the past years will help me improve and excel in the medical…
It has been ten years since my graduation from Temple University, where after diligence, perseverance, and a focused state of mind, I successfully accomplished my goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Science. With earning this degree I was ready to enter graduate school to further advance my skills needed to carry on my career path in becoming a Physician. After graduation I went on to medical school. It was challenging, but I was strong-minded and endured. I earned my MD-Ph.D. and started practicing medicine. I really love being a doctor. The…
Reflection allows an individual to identify the reasons or purpose of understanding the outcome of a particular situation in depth in term of emotions on thought and feeling on the topic area. In addition, Reflection is something that we do implicitly as part of being human, underpinning our identities through a process of negotiation between our sense of self and our experiences of others (Demetriou, 2000, p.210). Therefore, I have implemented this quote in my professional and personal goals I wanted and have achieved thought-out the process of the module. I have made continues effort in building my confidence in situations that I have felt uncomfortable in.…
The AVID program has helped me in many ways, but the thing it helped me the most with was actually understanding the importance of going to college and it has taught me how to get there. The process of going to college can be very confusing especially for a first generation college student like me. AVID has been extremely helpful with answering all my questions I have about college. It has also kept me on track with the things I need to need get done during my senior year in order to be able to attend college; for example, college application deadlines, scholarship deadlines, and taking tests (placement, SAT ACT).…
This paper is going to identify an occurrence of invidious comparison and vicarious traumatization that I’ve experienced. Invidious comparison happens each and every day to practically everyone in the world. It is human nature to compare themselves to others,…
Throughout my placement on Redbrook ward, i have had the opportunity to be involved and take part in MDT meetings. By producing the following table, i was able to understand why having MDT meetings are important, and the importance they have on effective patient care.…
Even as a sophomore, I understood that helping others succeed is essential. In my later years, I have perceived firsthand how vital such teamwork is. When a patient is admitted to the hospital for an operation, the pathologists, the nurses, the physician assistants, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and pharmacists all play a vital role in the concerted delivery of health care. In spite of this, many professors at Duke encourage incessant competition between pre-med students. Many of our courses are curved, and that means that it is in each student’s best interest for his or her peers to do poorly. This is not representative of the cooperative nature of the health care professions, nor is the increased competition conducive to learning.…
As the semester is coming to a close, I have realized this reflection will be my last. When I enrolled in this course, I hoped it would be any easy elective. This course has been a pleasant surprise! I have learned an enormous about the health care system that I wouldn’t have learned otherwise. Information in the course is pertinent for anyone going into the health care field to know, which is why it attracts a gamut of students with eclectic interests. Almost each and every student has a different interest in the field; this course is helpful for all of us. The uniqueness of this course is my favorite aspect of it.…
I would have loved to been admitted into the Health Science Education class as I registered 8th-grade year but unfortunately I did not get in to begin my studies in the health sciences early. As the end of Freshman year was approaching I witnessed everyone else being pulled out…
This week was the first time I did my clinical rotation as an FNP student and it was absolutely a completely new world for me! Why? First, I was expecting to just follow my preceptor who is a PA as I mentioned before. However, it was great that I an opportunity to follow my PA’s supervising physician who is a surgeon! Before going any further, I would like to share that I am in a specialty clinic – hand surgery - a subspecialty of orthopedics. The clinic deals with issues related to the elbow and below. The second reason that this is a such a novel health care setting for me is that I have learned new terms that I never encountered before such as Dupuytren’s disease and De Quervain's tenosynovitis (also known as “mommy’s wrist”). It was also a timely review of the anatomy and physiology of the arm and…
On my trip to the operation room, I observed a craniotomy. The purpose of the procedure was to remove a tumor from the left lower hemisphere of the brain in hopes that the removal of the tumor would fully restore the vestibulocochlear nerve which would intern restore hearing to the patient's left ear.…
In my opinion, I think this poem consists of more than one direct meaning, which is God being dead, and justice being gone. This poem reveals the sins committed on earth by human beings are bad, and how things would change when more people become corrupt and take advantage over one another. As a narrative poem, this poem describes how Satan will dominate the world when the end of the world arrives. The enjambment in the poem is used to convey that the end of the world is going to come not as a gradual event, but as one huge connected climax. This poem literally gives out a warning sign, and reveals what a horrific ending we would have if people decide to be selfish, greedy, and act inhumanely. The poem I chose to share at the poetry café is called, “God Lay Dead In Heaven” by Stephen Crane. Stephen Crane is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, and journalist. He is recognized by modern critics as one of the most innovative writers of his generation. Crane began writing at the age of four and had published several articles by the age of 16. Stephen Crane was born on November 1, 1971, and died on June 5, 1900; he had passed away at a very young age after accomplishing great works in literature. Having little interest in university studies, he left school in 1891 to work as a reporter and writer. When Crane began to write poetry seriously, he once stated that his overall poetic aim was "to give my ideas of life as a whole, so far as I know it". The poetic style used in both of his books of poetry, The Black Riders and Other Lines and War is Kind, was unconventional for the time in that it was written in free verse without rhyme, meter, or even titles for individual works. However the poem I have chosen was written by the proficient poet, in 1895.…
