Medea the Greek Goddess
Medea is the daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis and the granddaughter of the sun-god, Helios.
Medea falls in love with Jason, the leader of the Argonauts, when he first arrived in Colchis to obtain the golden fleece from her father in order to claim the crown from his uncle, King Pelias of Iolcus. King Aeetes refuses to give up the golden fleece and will only do so if Jason can complete three impossible tasks that no human could finish without magic.
Knowing that these tasks were impossible for Jason to do himself, Hera who was Jason’s protector, asked Aphrodite to intervene by making Medea fall in love Jason so she could help him in getting the golden fleece because she is the goddess of witchcraft and the daughter of King Aeetes. In exchange for her help, Jason promises to marry her.
- Medea gives a magic charm to Jason on his quest to get the golden fleece to protect himself when he harnesses the fire-breathing bulls and has to defeat the army that was produced when he would sow the dragon’s teeth in the field. Medea tells Jason to throw stones at the army so they would turn around and fight each other. The golden fleece was guarded by a huge dragon and Medea puts the dragon to sleep with her herbs so that Jason could safely get the golden fleece and bring it back to his home of Iolcus.
- Medea helps Jason become the a King Iolcus by killing her own brother who she dismembers, King Pelias of Iolcus who she tricks his daughters in killing their father in attempt to rejuvenate him (make younger) by cutting him up putting him in a boiling pot of water. In return, she gets dumped by Jason for a princess named Creusa who is the daughter of King Creon of Corinth. Medea feels betrayed and she gets revenge by sending a poisonous dress to Creusa that burns her flesh and also kills her father when he tries to take it off. To cause more pain towards Jason, Medea also kills her two sons that they had together.
After all these murders and the betrayal to her country

The original myth as told by Apollonius bears some difference to the on screen adaptation as well as similarities. In the myth Medea is present with Jason and as they come upon the serpent and it is Medea who calms the beast to allow Jason to retrieve the Golden Fleece “her charged drug in its eyes, and their most potent odour enveloped it and laid it unconscious” (Apollonius, Argonautica lines 158-159). She prays to Sleep and uses salves to render the beast unable. Once the serpent is out of the way they take the Fleece and leave the grove as Jason urges Medea onward.…

Euripides constructs Medea to be a powerful voice in a world of silent women. All women of the time were treated the same way, and they weren’t valued. Medea was a King’s daughter, sorceress and Apollo’s granddaughter, so just those factors made her different. Medea was not herself when she was with Jason, she changed when she became Jason’s wife living as a foreigner in a ‘civilised’ land far from her native home. As “an exile,” Medea has been self-contained and submissive, she has “won a warm welcome from her new fellow citizens” and has been “complete support” to her husband. Despite this, Jason shows “criminal behavior” and leaves Medea for a “princess’ bed” in order to further his own social position. As Medea reminds Jason, he “owes his life” to her; she has helped him gain the Golden Fleece, even killing her own brother to ensure their escape and then tricking Pelias’ daughters into killing their father the King. Medea’s sense of betrayal is then amplified when Jason tries to convince Medea that he did it for…

The “barbarian” princess and witch Medea met the Argonaut hero Jason while he was in Colchis on his quest for the Golden Fleece. She fell in love with Jason and used her magical knowledge to aid him in the seemingly impossible tasks set by her father King Aeetes as the price for obtaining the Golden Fleece. She fled Colchis with Jason back to his home at Iolcus in Thessaly, but they were soon forced to flee once more to Corinth, where they lived in relative peace for some ten years, during which time they bore two sons. Jason, however, looking to better his political position, deserted Medea in favour of an advantageous marriage with Creusa (known as Glauce in Greek), the daughter of King Creon of Corinth.…

Both Fifth century B.C. playwright Euripides and Roman poet and dramatist Ovid tell the story of Jason ditching Medea for another woman; however, they do not always share a perspective on the female matron's traits, behavior, and purpose. Euripides portrays a woman who reacts to injustice by beginning a crusade to avenge all who harmed her which she is prepared to see through even if it means resorting to the most contemptible methods. Ovid, on the other hand, tells of a much less extreme figure whose humble goal is only to persuade Jason to return. Despite these differences, both Medeas create trouble by acting with emotions instead of with reason, and as a result, put themselves in regrettable situations.…

The first task was to till the earth with the fire-breathing bulls that the god Ares had gifted Aeetes. Medea, a powerful sorceress, gave Jason an ointment to make him immune to fire and iron for a day. The second task was to sow the teeth the King gave Jason. But Medea knew that the teeth would grow into skeleton soldiers, so she instructed Jason to throw a stone into their midst, which would cause them to attack each other. The final task was to kill the dragon guarding the Fleece. Medea supplied Jason with a potion to make the Dragon fall into a deep sleep. Jason finally gets the Fleece, but King Aeetes chases after him and attempts to kill him. Medea cuts her brother into pieces to distract him while she and the Argonauts make their escape. Jason marries Medea after he becomes king again, although, the people are uncomfortable with their new Queen and banish them.
