Media impacts people in many ways. It could make someone want to improve themselves, it could make people depressed, feel worthless, and it could make some feel like they are better, better looking, and superior. Some people may develop eating disorders such as …show more content…
anorexia or bulimia. People develop these disorders because they believe that eating less or starving themselves will make them look like the people advertised.
People feel like they are being force fed how they need to look. Some people are fine with the way media portrays body image. Some become motivated to exercise to look like the models advertised. Media affects everyone in some way, whether it be good or bad.
Women and men are affected by media. Both see body image differently. Women see it as a need to get smaller and men see it as a need to get bigger and more built. Both men and women deal with these changes differently. Women usually do small exercises such as running, walking, jogging, sit-ups, crunches, and more. Men usually do strenuous workouts such as lifting weights, push-ups, pull-ups, and anything else possible to make themselves bigger.
Men also get depressed just like women do. They can develop eating disorders as well. People usually never think about how men feel about body image because they do not think that men are affected by it. Men are affected just as much as women are. Men feel like if they do not look like the men on tv or in magazines then no one will want them. Women and men both think that no one will ever want them because they do not look like “everyone else”.
Even though some people out there will be affected positively, the majority will be affected negatively. Negative effects are usually very unhealthy for a person. They can cause many health problems.
On the other hand, positive effects are healthy ones.
They do not cause any health problems. They can also boost a person’s self-esteem and make them feel better about themselves. But it rarely ever works out this way. People constantly need help for depression, anxiety, and many other problems they are having. Some of these cases may be caused by body image. Many people do not look deep enough into a person to see what is beautiful and what is not. They are too blinded by what the media has put out there as the “ideal body figure”.
No one is perfect in any way, but people seem to think this, due to body image. The term “perfect” is only used to cover up what is imperfect. People think that they need to be like the models and people advertised in media, and they do not take the time to realize that the models may not be beautiful on the inside. Most models in media are not always what they appear to be. There is computer editing, like photoshop to hide all of the imperfections. People just do not see this aspect of it
all.
Although, if we did not have this influence on body image then we would not have some of the products that we have today. There would be nothing like there is today if it were not for media. It is crazy to think that everything could be so different if there was not a media. The media does not only impact body image, it also impacts what people are interested in and what they are not interested in. Media plays a major role in people’s lives and no one ever really thinks of it that way because they are so used to it in their daily lives that it is just normal for them.
