They may not be able to force people to think something, but they are surprisingly efficacious in persuading some people what to think about ( Pratkanis and Aronson, 162 ). When some people view certain things on the news or any where else they, consciously or subconsciously, think about it. Although it might be in their mind all day, what they see can not coerce but only influence their opinion on the subject to change. The media is almost able to "brainwash" people to believe what they say. If the nine o'clock news says that rap music has caused a child to turn in to a murderer, then some parents are not going to let their children listen to rap. In the following week if that same news station says that rap music is good, then those same parents might give their children permission to listen to rap again. While those parents went by the what they heard on the news, my parents never changed their…

The media has always been an important aspect in people’s lives. Everyone always wants to know the latest news and what’s going on in the world. A few decades ago, the main forms of communication were newspapers and radio. Now days, people have plenty of options to receive news whether from radio, cable networks, or online. This has opened doors to many media outlets, which has created news to be more biased. In a society where information used to be interpreted by few to many, this has now changed shifts to where information has become much more inclusive and more people have the chance to get their voices heard making the media much more biased than ever before.…

I agree immensely with Peter on this matter. Mass media does hold a strong influence on the way in which individuals think and act. In fact, the media can sometimes be so overwhelming that the mass portion of people will end up believing every word that is spoke. Such a great number of people make up the media, and all of them are so convincing when making their point. This in turn is what makes it so hard for the public to distinguish between the right and the wrong, between the story that the media has blown out of proportion, or the real fact that lies within the story. However, how far does one actually go when checking a stories authenticity before becoming a part of that “echo chamber?” How critically do we judge someone or something that is making news before seeking the truth behind the stated fact? The mass percentage of people don’t think about what they are being told, they just believe it. People don't just judge, they get influenced. With this type of continuous undue exposure, uncontrolled access and belief short of thought won't lead us…

Author Peter Gibbon goes into detail on how the media has been linked with constant negative effects in society. He shows this by explaining that our society has become a “Wired World”(Gibbon 249). He informs the reader that the media has the ability to misinform people on current issues which results in turning people into a, cynical, suspicious, and fearful person. “It can lead us to lose faith in our nation, repudiate our past, question our leaders, and cease to believe in progress”(Gibbon 249) The media as well posses an empire of information.…

Overall, the media is a smart but sly business. They can easily influence us in bad ways, just like in Animal Farm, when Squealer lied to the animals many times for the pigs to have their way. From exaggerating stories to creating propaganda to covering up stories, the media can really control us without us realizing. Although it may be helpful sometimes, we need to be cautious of what we are…

Steven Pinker writes about the criticisms that media has on our minds. He disagrees with the statements that say media take a toll on our knowledge and intelligence, but in fact states that they improve it. His article, “Mind over Mass Media” also states that we have control over our minds to not become distracted, hence the title of the article. Pinker persuades the readers by using his own experience as a professor of psychology, reputation and scientific evidence to support his argument.…

The media is so influential that politicians use it to help them get elected. Using the media helped many presidents to get elected. One of the big reason John F. Kennedy won his election is because the media made him to appear as a better canidate than his oppenent. When Obama ran for president, he had a plethora of media coverage. Oprah Winfrey, who has her own media company, helped Obama greatly by giving him money to campain with. The media controls…

As a citizen, I feel that I am informed on world issues based on the media I access. I think that media has made some people biased. Their political views have been tainted because of who they follow or what they see on pages of the internet. Similar to product placement, somebody’s favorite Instagram account or Facebook page might hint towards certain types of political views and affects the “people you should follow” option. Once they follow them, they are immersing themselves into something they are not sure they believe in. It is only a belief that this is what they are supposed to think on politics. People may not be influenced as much at first but after times of seeing the same opinions over and over, they will begin to believe the opinions themselves. This was especially evident during the 2016 Presidential Race. 2016 was one of the first times in history where technology and political figure advertising was used the most. For example, Donald Trump used Twitter which gave him attention from all over the world. This led to memes which, I believe, led people to make fun of the Presidential Race. It made them not want to participate in the election,…
