In the media piece, “My Flesh and Blood”, the social model of disability was being used. “The social model of disability says that disability is caused by the way society is organized, rather than by a person’s impairment or difference” (Scope, 2016). In other words, the way society views these people with disability is what really disables them rather than their impairments. The fact that Susan does not see the children disabilities as barriers or problems is why these children do not feel as if they were different or disabled. Furthermore, the more obvious you make someone’s disability and create barriers, then they cannot be independent, be a part of society, or live their own lives. The social model of disability gives these children and other people an opportunity to say their own perspective and how they see things as a person with impairments. In the film, we see these children accepted by society, they go to school with other children with and without disabilities, participate in school activities, have transportation available to them, etc. Throughout the documentary you could see how happy these children are and how they accept their disabilities and don’t consider themselves different or disabled.
