Introduction
In recent times, together with the development of science technology, the mass media industry has also achieved many advances. Media has played an important role in our society in providing information as well as broadening knowledge to mankind. Despite some positive effects, human beings have recently witnessed the exposure of violence in almost every type of media such as television, movies, computer games and on the Internet. This raises an increasing concern about the harmful influences that media has created.

Media violence poses a threat to public health inasmuch as it leads to an increase in real-world violence and aggression. Research shows that fictional television and film violence contribute to both a short-term and a long-term increase in aggression and violence in young viewers. Television news violence also contributes to increased violence, principally in the form of imitative suicides and acts of aggression. Video games are clearly capable of producing an increase in aggression and violence in the short term, although no long-term longitudinal studies capable of demonstrating long-term effects have been conducted. The relationship between media violence and real-world violence and aggression is moderated by the nature of the media content and characteristics of and social influences on the individual exposed to that content. Still, the average overall size of the effect is large enough to place it in the category of known threats to public health.

Human and primate young have an innate tendency to imitate whomever they observe.10- 11 Neuroscientists have discovered “mirror neurons” in primates that seem to promote such processing.12 Consequently, children who observe (in the media or in the environment around them) others exhibiting a specific aggressive behavior, eg, hitting, are more likely to perform the same aggressive behavior immediately.11,13- 14 Theoretically, the more similar that children think they and the observed model are, the more readily imitation will take place, but the imitation mechanism is so powerful that even fantasy characters are imitated by young children.

Ex-army psychologist Dave Grossman, a leading American activist, points the finger squarely at movies and video games. He argues that Hollywood films have desensitized kids to the consequences of violence, and video games have taught them how to handle a gun. But others, like psychiatrist Serge Tisseron, maintain, "just because a film has a murder scene doesn't mean people are going to commit the act... That overstates the power of the image and under-estimates the role of parents."

Everyone is influenced and shaped by society. Society affects our perceptions, our consciousness, and our actions. A majority of the influence, especially on the younger demographic comes through the media; specifically through television. It is important to examine how violence in the media develops a pervasive cultural environment that cultivates a heightened state of insecurity, exaggerated perceptions of risk and danger, and a fear-driven propensity for hard-line political solutions to social problems. The purpose of this essay is to evaluate the impact of television and media violence, as well as the human cost of violent media, and the overall effects on society from watching TV.…

The twenty-first century is the golden age of media. Following the widespread of technology in the late twentieth century, media has become a constant presence in people’s lives. New innovations in technology have led to blockbuster movies, music at the touch of our fingertips, weekly television programs and a vast array of video games available on various devices. With new consoles and devices constantly being released, everyone, no matter their age, can readily access media. However, over time, media has taken on a violent transformation. Due to this fact, the connection between violence and aggression is self-evident, and the continual stream of violence through these forms of media do not help the matter in any regard. This is supported by Nancy C. Cornwell’s statement that “research supports a correlation between media violence and aggression.” Media can send many messages to those who are exposed to it, but this statement suggests that a less than savory ideal may be sent to younger audiences who happen to be exposed to it. As is evidenced by the fact that this influence from a form of media can be found in many cases where someone from a younger audience took the ideals portrayed too far. This is shown to be fact instead of speculation due to copycat crimes that can lead to devastating reenactments of fictionalized drama and horror being implemented in reality. There are many examples that support this statement like this given statement from Cornwell’s article “violence in Media,” “The numerous anecdotal examples of copycat rapes, suicides and violent crime, closely mimicking television drama, movie scenes and provocative song lyrics” (Cornwell). With the added perspective derived from this statement supplied by Cornwell, these ideas show the realistic evidence supplied by the facts given, which garners a far more vast well of knowledge, that leads to the…

In Violent Media is Good for Kids, Gerard Jones argues that violent forms of media in our pop culture can be used as a means of helping kids cope with rage. Throughout his essay, Jones promotes the idea that kids should use “creative violence” as a tool to transfer their negative emotions rather than acting out on them (197). Although Jones points out valid arguments to defend violence in media, he fails give a clear definition to determine what constitutes it. Thus, he excludes all other forms of media violence such as gaming, movies, television shows, etc. that dominate our current world. Jones’ argument is based mostly on Marvel Comics with superheroes acting out their “violence” to perceived injustices. His lack of sources makes him lose credibility and ineffectively persuade his readers, especially parents, to use media violence as a form of creativity to diminish any negative behaviors.…

Written from a scientific approach, this article by Barbara J. Wilson takes a close look at how media violence affects children. By age 18 an American child will have seen 16,000 simulated murders and 200,000 acts of violence (United States 2). Over the last thirty years more than a thousand studies, by major medical and public health groups, have concluded that media violence does have an impact on children (Steyer 72). How often do children hear, see, or talk about violent television? Could it possibly be a factor in how aggressive or desensitized these children become? Surely anyone who has access to the news has seen the recent exponential growth in violence throughout the world. It is interesting to note that this growth and the massive production and display of media violence have occurred simultaneously. According to W. James Potter, Professor of communication, the two are correlated. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and critique Professor Potter’s research by identifying and explaining three flaws and one strength that are apparent in his published article, and to share personal beliefs regarding this matter.…

In 1972, the Surgeon General issued the following warning on violent TV programs: "It is clear to me that the causal relationship between televised violence and antisocial behavior is sufficient to warrant appropriate and immediate remedial action…there comes a time when the data are sufficient to justify action: that time has come” (Steinfeld, 1972). Since the time that video games began to dominate the market, media has been investigated as one of the major sources of malevolent behaviors in society. “In the years since this Surgeon General warning was issued, hundreds of additional studies have shown a link between violent media exposure and aggression”(Anderson& Bushman, 2002).Although this warning related to television, it is a wonder if these same negative effects could be present in the use of violent video games. With all of the violence occurring in and surrounding schools in this current day, it is possible that violent video games also have a negative effect on the behaviors and interactions of those who use them. In the following, we will discover three different reasons why violent video games have a negative effect on players. Although video games are touted as being responsible to the refinement and advancement of fine motor skills and creative thinking, there are some issues when it comes to violent video games. When compared with television, there are some overlapping concerns. There are some benefits to playing video games over television, however. While video games involve active play, television uses more passive interaction between the player and the media. Information is better transmitted when a person is actively involved with the media being used. For instance, most children would prefer to learn a new skill or…

After 40+ years of research, one might think that debate about media violence effects would be over. An historical examination of the research reveals that debate concerning whether such exposure is a significant risk factor for aggressive and violent behavior should have been over years ago (Bushman & Anderson, 2001). Four types of media violence studies provide converging evidence of such effects: laboratory experiments, field experiments, cross-sectional correlation studies, and longitudinal studies (Anderson & Bushman, 2002a; Bushman & Huesmann, 2000). But the development of a new genre-electronic video games-reinvigorated the debate.…

Violence in the Media has grown in our society for sometime. The world is constantly flooded with violent images from the media. Including television, video games, movies, and music. There have been cases around the world that kids at the ages of two to eighteen years spend at least six hours per day using media. What types of media attracts most people? Murder, death, sexual exploitation, profanity, and lots of action to keep you at the edge of your seat. There have been studies that show that violence changes the affect on the frontal cortex of the brain. Less activity on the frontal cortex shows that the person has been exposed to more media violence than the person with more frontal activity. Kids who should be learning about sexual activity from their parents around their high school years are learning them early just by watching the media. Every TV show or movies you watch has at least one sex scene or even more giving the child early knowledge of sexual activity. The media such as today is so addictive that it’s hard to escape it’s influence. A 15 year old boy committed suicide when his father took his Xbox away from him. In my opinion it serves as a day to day function were you should watch television for a certain amount of hours. Many people believe that media is the main reason youngsters are committing violence in schools. The media is the main reason why teenage pregnancy is still increasing and parents are scared to let their kids go outside to play.…
