Alexian Brothers Medical Center - AlexiCare
Alexian Brothers Medical Center is located in Elk Grove Village, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago, IL. They are a 387-bed acute care hospital, with more than 900 physicians on staff, representing more than 80 medical and surgical specialties. They treat more than 18,000 patients annually. Instead of purchasing an existing EHR system, they opted to create their own, AlexiCare, to assist with the handling and processes involving medical records and patient care.
While Alexian has created their own electronic health record system, there are still departments that maintain paper records, such as the Emergency Room department and Surgery. The ER is beginning the use of their own system, All Scripts. However, this system does not communicate directly with AlexiCare, and has created issues of its own with communication between departments. When a patient comes from the ER up to the surgical floor, the chart must be printed, brought up to the patient’s floor, and then entered into the system. At the time of discharge, all paper records then go to MR to be scanned into the system for storage and future review and access.
Medical Records, the onsite patient Pharmacy, and the nursing staff are all users of AlexiCare. AlexiCare has shown to have many strengths in its use to the nursing and physician staff. They are able to view their patient’s charts from anywhere. If a patient is transferred from one floor or department to another, the chart is immediately accessible electronically. Nurses are able to see the current status of the patient, any work list items that may be due or past due, any and all tests that have been done or need to be scheduled, and any interventions that may have been necessary. The glucometers speak directly to the system, creating a better accuracy and reducing the number of possible errors in entering information. All patients wear a
