"Make a difference today for someone who is fighting for their tomorrow"-Jim Kelly. Noting that this was a necessity to have, yet so scarce, I decided that being a health care provider was the career for me. I grew up always surrounded by the health care setting; my mother was a Lab Technician who worked with several Physician Assistants. I was often in her office during after school hours of my elementary/middle school years.…

I interviewed Dr. Janet Geyer and received some great information from her. Geyer sand the hardest part of becoming a doctor was “The lack of personal time, everything became about school.” I knew that going into the medical field would be hard and the majority of my time would be spent studying, but hearing it from a doctor makes it real to me. I asked Geyer what makes her happy to be a doctor and why, she said “I like the intimate part of being a nurse, people tell me more than what they would normally tell others and sometimes I am really able to make a difference.” I thought about what she said and I would love to make a difference in someone’s life, but I also need to remember that I cannot get too attached to my patients. Geyer said that if she could go back and give herself advice from when she was in college she would tell…

As a phlebotomist and young college student, I knocked on the door to find my fourth chemotherapy patient of the day unresponsive. It was my first “code blue.” A team of healthcare professionals rushed into the room and my attention was directed towards the physician assistant (PA) who was leading the team as he implemented advanced cardiac life support protocol. Witnessing the empathy, compassion and wisdom of the PA as he updated the family on the care plan for the patient, while spending the time to explain to the family and ensuring that all questions were answered strengthened my desire to develop the same compassionate interactions with a family and patients as a PA.…

Everything in my life began to change, from my friends to my attitude. My future was looking bright. The only thing left was to pick a profession, something that would ignite my spark. That was when my parents were involved in a terrible accident. In March 2009, my parents were pedestrians struck by a car. My mother was diagnosed with a fractured tibial plateau, and was wheelchair bound for five months. During this difficult time I accompanied her to numerous appointments and met many different medical personnel. Surprisingly, I became inspired. It was an awful time for my family, but it was an experience that changed my life. Everything about the healthcare system fascinated me. I asked many questions about medications, imaging techniques that were used on my mother, and job descriptions of practically everyone I had encountered. I remember telling a nurse about how I found the hospital to be the most interesting place that I have ever visited and she replied, “Well if you feel that way, you should become a doctor, they practically live…

I remember taking Medical Terminology almost three years ago back in high school. With only eight students in my class, the class was “early-bird”, meaning that it started at 5:00 AM. Despite the early time, I will forever be indebted to the instructor for helping guide me in journey to become a cardiologist. Before the class, I had never had any exposure to the medical field. Since my instructor was an ICU RN, I was given the chance to not only learn terms used in medicine, but also to go to the hospital to observe different physicians every weekend.…

I believe my natural scientific ability and the social aspect of a medicine career suits me perfectly. The opportunity to study medicine would involve life long learning and an ever changing profession, the course would not only widen my primary scientific knowledge but also broaden my research skills. My love for furthering my knowledge and my curiosity into health, diseases and defences of the body is why I have a passion for medicine.…
