My Junior year in high school Trio Upward Bound, program that provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits, organized a visit to Idaho State University where we got to choose two fields we would like to learn more about. When I arrived there I knew I wanted to learn more about the medical field therefore I decided to go look at the Medical Laboratory class. As I was in the class, the instructor explained everything they learned there and some of the things they did, he even let me do some work that MLT’s do, like test what type of blood other patients had and look through microscopes to see what type of diseases each slide had. I’ve also learned that it requires a lot of physical demands such as having to sit or stand for a long period of time, repeating the same movements, and using your hands to handle, control, or feel objects, such as tools, or controls. By doing this research I’ve realized that I am capable of accomplishing these requirements along with the many others that this profession requires. I am highly interested in this profession and not for the salary, but because I will get to help doctors diagnose patients and perform a variety of tests. It interests me because I secretly will be a doctor behind the scenes also because I enjoy working independently, but enjoy being part of a team and collaborating with others. Although I know that this career is going to require a lot of me and is very stressful, I know I will be able to accomplish my dream career because I am very passionate about what I want to do and
