Medication Reflective Essay

This is a reflective account on administering medication. I have asked and confirmed permission from a service user whom I will refer to as Mrs.N. At the start of my shift I would receive a handover from a senior member of staff who has administered and monitored the medication the service user would require during the night. We would together check all MARS sheets were marked ans the medication count was correct. I would receive the drug trolley keys from the previous shifts senior member of staff and keep them on my person throughout my shift as these keys should not be giver to any other member of staff. Before I get ready to administer any medication I would check Mrs N's care plan for any changes or medical professional visits that have happened which may indicate a change in her medication. The drug trolley is kept in a locked room that has a temperature that does not exceed 25 degrees Celsius and this is noted on the daily temperature monitoring sheet. The trolley itself is locked and chained securely to the wall. I would prepare medication cups, glasses and fresh water. N is sitting upright and relaxed on an arm chair and I now approach her and ask in a friendly manner if she would like to have her morning medication. Mrs. N agrees and is able to take her medication by herself. I hand over the medication cup and Mrs. N empties them onto her handf. I hold the glass of fresh water until she is ready to take it from me. Mrs. N takes her medication and I wait until I can witness and confirm she has swallowed all medication given. We then have a brief chat after which I thank her. I then return to the MAR sheet to sign my initials in the date and time box to confirm that the medication has been administered. I continue to monitor Mrs. N throughout the day for any potential side-effects which I can check with an up-to-date BNF manual if I feel Mrs. N shows any
