By hydrosteam, steam and water distillation methods. The effects of temperature, light and length of storage on the rate of oil evaporation and its quality were determined. The oil volatilizes fastest when exposed to sunlight while refrigeration retards its evaporation. A comparison of thin layer chromatograms of oil samples are unexposed to light within 7 months showed a decrease in number of spots, showing deterioration of the quality of the oil. The degree of volatility of ginger oil obtained from fresh, frozen and air-dried samples were also determined. Of the oil samples, the oil from the air-dried sample gave the lowest rate of evaporation (M.T. Brandares, B. B Dar Juan, A. M. Yuelban and F. E. Anzaldo ) A Comparative Study of the Vermifuge Property, A Crude Extract of Luya Rhizomes (Zingiber officinale Family Zingiberaceae) using Maceration and Expression as Methods of Extraction, the rhizomes were washed with water and cut into pieces. Half of it was macerated with an exact amount of eighty percent ethyl alcohol while the other half was expressed from the luya rhizomes. The extracts were placed in the refrigerator to prevent mold growth. It was only brought out when the worms were already available for testing (A. L. Alberto, C. Astor, A. Calacal and G. M.

In this experiment, a situ method steam distillation was performed and essential oils were isolated from cloves. Once the oils were obtained, extraction techniques were used to extract a crude, eugenol, and acetyleugenol product sample. These samples were submitted for GC analysis and the normalization area percents were calculated to confirm their purity; for the crude sample it was 93.95% eugenol and 6.05% acetyleugenol, for the eugenol sample it was 100% eugenol and 0% acetyleugenol, and for the acetyleugenol sample it was 24.84% eugenol and 75.16% acetyleugenol. The IR spectrum was also found for the eugenol and acetyleguenol products, which confirmed their identities; the eugenol sample showed the presence of the alcohol functional group O-H at 3425.19 cm-1 and both alkene C=C at 1604.43 cm-1 and aromatic C=C at 1509.35 cm-1. The acetyleugenol sample showed the presence of ester C=O at 1760.27 cm-1, both alkene C=C at 1506.83 cm-1 and aromatic C=C at 1417.46 cm-1.…

While working at the University of Missouri, Dr Cartwright became interested in acne - especially the inflammatory lesions that require intensive and individualized medical treatment under the direction of a dermatologist. He devoted the rest of his life to studying its causes and development. Dr Cartwright identified 58 stages of conglobate acne, acne ful´minans and acne indura´ta combined. Identifying those stages made it possible to detect acne before it reached an advanced stage, consequently, making it highly treatable. Before Dr Cartwright's discoveries, it was almost always impossible to have it under control.…

Current literature favors combination treatment plans over monotherapy. The first first-line therapy for acne vulgaris is topical retinoids and a topical antimicrobial agent, such as benzoyl peroxide. Topical retinoids are comedolytic and anti-inflammatory. It is important to note that since topical retinoids thin the stratum corneum, skin irritation, peeling, redness and sun sensitivity are common side effects. Benzoyl peroxide is effective against Propionibacterium acnes, decreasing colonization, and subsequent inflammation. Other topical antimicrobial medications can be given, such as clindamycin, but bacterial resistance may…

Essential oils are volatile components associated with the aromas of seeds, bark, or roots of plants. In this experiment, the essential oil eugenol was isolated from ground cloves using steam distillation techniques. Eugenol had a high boiling point, but it was isolated at a lower temperature by performing a co-distillation with water, a process known as steam distillation. This technique allowed the desired material to be distilled at a lower temperature than 100℃. The point of the steam distillation was to use an azeotrope to isolate the organic compound from a solid. The azeotrope was the liquid mixture with a constant boiling point. After obtaining pure eugenol, the percent recovery was calculated and an IR spectroscopy was performed.…

Acne (also known as Pimples) is a skin problem that affects almost all teenagers. The condition results from the action of hormones on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands). The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum that empties onto the skin surface through the hair follicle opening (pore). The mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria that normally live on the skin to grow in the follicle openings. When this happens, pores become clogged and pimples develop.…
