In the novel, Medicine River, Thomas King creates a story of a little community to reflect the whole native nation. A simply return of Will's makes the little town seem to be more colourful. "Medicine River makes non-native readers think a little longer and harder about the lives of the first people they live among and the places they inhabit." As a non-native reader, it is extra difficult to feel and understand the book because we didn't go through all the steps. Although Will starts like a foreigner, he becomes part of the unique community eventually. Medicine River shows the past history of Canada and teaches readers to learn from the past experience in order to become better people. Will is the main character in the novel, Medicine River. The one characteristic most commonly noted in all early accounts was that of the river's extreme power and force, and is detailed by account after account of failed attempts to sail the river. With attempts to travel along the river came the increased encounters with various tribes of the Pacific Northwest. White writes that passage along the river was "not just physical; it was social and political" (14). It was factors like this that forced racial interaction, growth, and the spread of ideas to the region.…

Will learns to be more bold and courageous, while Rucker learns to be happier and to exhibit a sort of gentleness and generosity that he had lost due to the trials he went through while still being married to Mattie Lou. Will's experiences help him better understand subjects such as death and prejudice, helping him grow up. Rucker, however, reaches a sort of renaissance. He allows Miss Love Simpson to change him by cutting his hair to appear younger and more modern in outlook. As the novel progresses, it is clear that in many ways, both Rucker and Will are moving along the same arc but in different directions. In the end, they both move towards a sort of middle…

This is particularly significant for Quick Lamb, who, is spiritually linked to the river in a number of ways. The river acts as a place of peace, purpose and belonging for Quick. Connecting with his mother when they go prawning, glowing after fishing in the country, and most importantly, falling in love with Rose Pickles, are the most significant spiritually defining events that Quick experiences while on the river. Through realising just how symbolically important the river is to him, Quick finally understands the true meaning of his life, and gains a feeling of belonging that allows him to finally shed his self-degrading title of “the lost lamb.” (p 310) Australia is a country that values the water. Geographically, we are surrounded by it, with most of our population residing close to the shores. As a result of this, the water is seen as a common gathering place, from which one cannot easily escape nor regard as irrelevant to the Australian way of life. Winton has taken this idea and incorporated it into Cloudstreet, to emphasise and promote a relevant part of Australian…

“We accept the verdict of the past until the need for change cries out loudly enough to force upon us a choice between the comforts of inertia and the irksomeness of action,” - Learned Hand. During the 50s Hand was seen a defender of civil rights when subversion, the downfall or corruption of something, was on the verge of dividing the nation, also known as the Red Scare. So, this quote is relevant to the film, Pleasantville, directed and written by Gary Ross because not only was it from the same time period as the film, but it describes the choices that the public has when change presents itself. In Pleasantville, Gary Ross is trying to convey the theme that a figure of authority or a government cannot suppress or prevent changes in a society when it begins to take root.…

The characteristics of the river reflect with some of the character personalities and life. Matt Reynolds explains in his book review how “Paul connects to the rough rapids “ because he “lives a more successful life...but in the end his reckless and unpredictable nature ends up leading to his demise. “ Reynolds also describes how Norman “connects to the slow flowing streams” because he is pretty much the exact opposite of his brother Paul. Maclean’s father would also parallel fly fishing with life and teach lessons through it. To his father, ”all good things come by grace, and grace comes by art, and art does not come easy." He believed that if you wanted something you had to work hard towards it. He tried teaching this through fly fishing. Practicing fly fishing was his way of teaching hard work and catching a fish was the compensation of all that hard…

Good morning/Afternoon class and teacher. Today I’m going to be speaking about how Garry Ross the director of Pleasantville, and Simple Plan’s Untitled, develop and convey meaning through the use of visual techniques. Gary Ross develops his ideas of change by using various visual techniques to emphasize an awakening throughout the characters of Pleasantville. He addresses that change is something you have to accept in life, even if you’re not use to it. Gary Ross also contrasts the ignorance and mindlessness of the people who live in Pleasantville with the hunger for knowledge and communicating to the viewer that change and knowledge go hand in hand.…

To be independent is to be without limitation and free of civilization, all the while, the thought of being free of civilization, without limitation is overwhelmingly wild. In the novel Meridian, by Alice Walker, the short presence of a character addressed as The Wild Child symbolizes the theme of self awareness and pursuing one’s life independently. Alice walker uses the short presence of The Wild Child as an influential factor when developing her main character Meridian. The use of characters from Meridian’s ancestry, such as Feather Mae (Meridian’s great grandmother) and inanimate objects, such as The Sojourner (tree), further support the theme that The Wild Child represents.…
