My annotation examines the traditional social order of southern white men as well as the principles of white supremacy. In chapter 7, Chesnutt examines these elements through the conservations between Dr. Price, Dr. Burns, and Major Carteret concerning Dr. Miller’s assistance in the operation. In this argument, the reader is able to see and contrast the perspectives of a northern liberal white man and the perspective of southern white supremacist. Because I have studied in the past the origin of race and because I currently study the functions of race in present day, I found this portion of the novel to be very interesting. The passage highlights several situations that I had not yet had the time to delve into before reading the novel, such…
From the first chapter, Sue Monk Kidd makes it clear that she’s writing a novel about the relationships between different kinds of women. Because the protagonist of her book is a young teenager who’s lost her mother, and the majority of the other female characters are adult women, the most important kind of woman-to-woman relationship for the novel is that between the mother and the daughter. Lily travels to Tiburon, South Carolina, in search of information about her dead mother, Deborah, and she also admits to be looking for a maternal figure—a metaphorical mother—to replace Deborah. How does Kidd depict the mother-daughter relationship, and what are the strengths and weaknesses of this relationship?…

In Peter Draper’s chapter, he wanted identify the importance of patronage and political influence on the construction or reconstruction of English Gothic architecture. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is quite a different novel from most and stands out from the variety of other books concerning the Vietnam war. Unlike most books which are classified as fiction or nonfiction The Things They Carried is surreal and fits neither category. O'Brien uses the Vietnam war as his baseline for his story The Things They Carried but he exaggerates and throws bits and pieces of fiction in there to make the story more enticing. It makes you wonder did what I just read really happen? Fitting into no category but rather a book written by a soldier to show the horrors and work that occurred made O'Brien simply want to share his experience with the world, and as such deviating from a generic…
Chapter 1 – Analysis – Chapters 1 is somewhat of an explanation of what the rest of the book is going to be like. The author gives us a sense of whom the characters are and what roles they are going to play in the story. For example, by reading the chapter, I think that Jethro is a very sentimental boy. I think this because Jethro was simply thinking of the war, when he suddenly started thinking of his sister Mary, who had died some time before. Since this book is about the war, I think that it is going to be similar to My Brother Sam is Dead, in the way that it is going to affect the family. By this, I mean that like the book My Brother Sam is Dead, the war is going to tear apart the family with its conflicts and situations. I also noticed in this chapter that Jethro and his mother seem to be very close and attached to each other. I think this might be because of the reason that Jethro is one of Ellen’s few children that actually survived and did not die.…
After reading the first chapter in Of Mice and Men, it becomes apparent to readers that Lennie is unlike many adults. As Lennie is described throughout the chapter, readers begin to see that he possess characteristics similar to those of a child. Even the way Lennie is described as he eats provides an impression that he is very childish. While eating his beans (page15), they were said to “fall out of his mouth” painting a picture of Lennie eating similar to a baby. George, not only his friend, seems to take on the role of his “father” as he is perceived to be the one who cares for him. In the chapter George becomes upset by Lennie’s actions and makes statements that upset Lennie (page11). Similar to how children threaten their parents of running…

During the Sierra Leone Civil War that started on March 23, 1991, the eleven-year armed conflict caused the displacement of many citizens and the conscription of child soldiers. The novel A Long Way Gone, shows the memoir of Ishmael Beah’s childhood during the violent years of the war. Throughout the story the author Beah embodies the loss of innocence in many parts of his early life. Using the different events that Beah experiences, the author displays the transition of youthfulness to the end of Beah’s childhood. When Beah is inducted into the military and endures hardships, he truly loses innocence and stops calling flashbacks to his childhood causing him to disconnect from reality.…
