Imagine getting a call from your child’s school telling you your child has a fever. Like most parents you would probably give your child some Tylenol and let them sleep it off. One mother did just that. Rebecca Hendricks received that call from her daughter's school around 2:30 p.m. in December of last year. The school nurse called to report Scarlett Anne had a temperature and needed to be picked up from school. Scarlett’s mother Mrs. Hendricks then brought her 5-year-old home, gave her Tylenol, fixed her a bowel of hot soup and let her rest on the couch. Within two days, Scarlett Anne seemed to be improving. She ate cereal for breakfast, then curled up on the couch with her mother to watch cartoons. Within half an hour Scarlett Anne was asleep. While asleep her mother became concerned by her labored breathing, her mother then woke her up, dressed her in pajamas, and rushed her to the emergency room. Three and half hours later, the little girl with beautiful blue eyes was dead. The CDC estimates that up to 20% of the population gets sick from the flu each year. Of that percent indicated only 40% are regularly vaccinated against the flu. Sadly, Scarlet Anne did not receive a vaccine that could have saved her life.…
Good Morning teachers and fellow students, just what is poetry to you? Is it just a block of words organised to mean a message? Or does it have some form of deeper meaning? To me, poetry, especially Gwen Harwood’s, is a form of communication that transcends time, it is a method of communicating your emotions and especially your beliefs to those of your time and to those in the future, in light of this, I truly enjoyed Gwen Harwood’s poetry, as it has granted me the ability to see the world through a different, more interesting perspective.…

“I’m done, I did what I was supposed to. My baby is going to get here safe.” Were one of the last words Idaho teen Jenni Lake said after delivering her baby. Jenni was diagnosed with astrocytoma in 2009 a form of cancer centered in the brain and spinal cord that is almost always fatal by the time she was 16. She would undergo intensive treatment with doctors telling she would have a 30% chance of living only 2 years, Doctors also stated that due to her state she wouldn’t be able to get pregnant which troubled the teen. Around 2010 Jenni Lake discovered she was pregnant with her long-time boyfriend Nathan Wittman which started the unfortunate decision for Jenni to continue treatment and seek other options for the baby or to stop treatment and give birth to a possible healthy baby. Jenni chose to stop treatment for her baby the ultimate sacrifice a mother could do. I believe Jenni made the right choice seeing how the situation was and under the circumstances if I was in her shoes I…

Imagine that you trained all your life for that special moment of playing in your first NHL game. At the beginning of your first shift in the game suddenly another player’s stick comes up and strikes you in the eye. This incident ends your career. This could have been prevented if you wore a visor. I think visors should be mandatory in the NHL in order to improve a player’s safety. Statistics have proven players who wear visors in the NHL play less aggressive. There are many incidents involving sticks and pucks going into player’s faces. A recent incident occurred between Philadelphia’s Chris Pronger and Toronto’s Mikhail Grabovski. Furthermore, two years ago a former NHL player Brad May, Gave a speech supporting the use of visors.…

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…
