The leadership of Christianity was organized as the Bishops are the highest ranked in the Church, followed by presbyters/priests and then the deacons. The bishops are the successors of the 12 Apostles, the presbyters/priests assisted the bishop and deacons made sure people of need are taken care of. The most important bishops resided in Rome (Pope- Catholic), Constantinople (Patriarch- Orthodox; rose to power), Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem.…
During the war, the Nazis did all they could to destroy and ruin Kazimierz. After the war, decades of communist neglect left Kazimierz a crumbling ruin. It became a dark and dangerous place, a district to be avoided after nightfall. But with communism's fall, Kazimierz has changed beyond all recognition. Besides art galleries and cafés, buildings have been renovated and museums opened. There has also been a reawakening in the importance of Jewish history and culture in Poland, for instance, the Jewish Culture Festival which takes place every year attracts thousands of visitors, both Jews and non-Jews alike. Perhaps one of the most important factors in Kazimierz's renewal was Steven Spielberg's film, Schindler's List, which was filmed here…
For this fieldwork assignment I decided to go to a Roman Catholic Church. I was raised Catholic and I went to a Catholic school from second grade to eighth grade so, I had background knowledge on the teaching of the church. I have taken field notes and came across some reoccurring tendencies. All of these reoccurring tendencies support my thesis, which is: one of the many values the Catholic Church holds importance to is having much respect for their God. Throughout this essay I will explain my findings and the correlation between them and my assumption that this particular church holds being respect to a high regard.…
The Reign of King Hezekiah is an article written by Immanuel Velikovsky and was known for writing controversial books on ancient history. Immanuel Velikovsky was a Jewish independent scholar, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst that was born in Russian. Velikovsky was viewed as a radical because of who had several books and articles about his interpretation of history is published. His article lays out his interpretation of the timeline on The Reign of King Hezekiah by using scripture and a science theory of the sun standing still. His thesis in this article reads “Here, however, the concern is with a chronological problem, albeit minor, dealing with the reign of Hezekiah…
Peter Paul Ruben’s tapestry The Meeting Between Abraham and Melchizedek completed in about 1633 depicts the Old Testament story of Melchizedek welcoming home the victor Abraham after a military defeat. The Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia commissioned this tapestry as part of the series called The Triumph of the Eucharist as a gift to The Covent of the Barefoot Royals to be hung up on feast days. In order to complete this tapestry Ruben worked in stages, completing three oil sketches and one cartoon painting to determine the subject, figure out the basic composition and architectural features, then finally working on the details and color before painting the full sized model for the tapestry weavers.…
Passage 57 of Jacob Rader Marcus’s work, The Jew in the Medieval World, provides great insight into the role of Jews under Muslim rule during the 10th century. The primary individual of the document is Saadia, who became the Gaon at the academy of Sura during the period of the Abbasid caliphate. During this dynasty, the “Jews had a political head in the exilarch and great religious leaders in the Geonim” (Marcus 323). Through the story of Saadia, it is apparent that while both the gaon and the exilarch held prominent positions and considerable amounts of power, each maintained his own specific jurisdiction.…
All of the four categorized areas of the early history of Judaism are equally significant when influencing the twenty-first century Judaism. Yet out of the four, the Bronze Age is significant in historical wise and in modern day Judaism. “He gave them a set of rules by which they should live, including the Ten Commandments.”(Early History of Judaism, page 1 and paragraph 2) During the Bronze Age, the sacred texts were created which help Jewish people in the past but also in the modern times too. Also, this was a time for the Jew people to learn more about being the “chosen people” since the people had God guiding and instructing them through the prophets. The texts and the teachings are still used in the modern day, it helps a person live their…
The main theme I found to be constant in “The fear of losing a culture” is the idea that the Latin culture will not disappear as Latin people immigrate to the United States. Essentially, Latin culture will form a synthesis with North American culture. I had an interesting experience trying to figure out what other poem or story would share a similar theme with this one. My choice is the poem titled “Go Down Moses”.…
Generally, priests were seen as “god’s servant”. Their main duty was to look after the holy statues of gods and goddesses in the temples. They were the only ones allowed to touch the statues. Many priests were needed and they all had different jobs. Lector priests could read and copy sacred books in the temple library. Hour priests watched the moon and stars to hep predict the right time for festivals. “God’s singers” played the harp and sang during services. Finally, the “ka priest” served the spirits of the dead. There were also levels of priests. The high priest was appointed by the pharaoh and carried out the daily rituals on the king’s behalf. They advised the priest and oversaw all religious ceremonies. The “second prophet” or the “high priests’ deputy” was responsible for temple property, staff, and business. The last level, part time priests, served in the temples as porters, sacrificers, head gardeners, painters, scribes, and monitored the work of carpenters, and bakers. They also handled the more common requests and concerns. Because there are so many priests who specialize in different areas, they usually worked only one out of every four months. When they weren’t doing their job, they were supposed to be role models and good citizens. They had no authority to direct other people’s activities though.…
The church since its birth(Catholic) has suffered many oppositions both intra and inter conflicts. The expected result of these conflicts by the frontiers is to bring the church to a brink of destruction and extinction.Following the words of Bishop J.B Adelakun;bishop emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo,he said celibacy is "A discipline of the Church and not essential to the priesthood.Agents of destruction have not for once relented in their mission. The same man who shot Pope John Paul II in May 13, 1981, in St. Peter's Square at Vatican City is still the same person demanding that Pope Benedict XVI should resign. Mehmet Ali Ağca, a trained sniper from Turkey who shot the late pope has been has been making effrontery to terminate the assignment of the church to reach out to the unreached.…
Baudelaire once said that "the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist." But in modern-day Vatican City, the devil is considered alive and well. The late Pope John Paul II personally performed three exorcisms during his reign, and Pope Benedict XVI expanded the ranks of Catholic-sponsored exorcists throughout the world. In fact, Father Gabriele Amorth, the Church's chief exorcist, claims to expel more than 300 demons a year from the confines of his Vatican office, and there are some 350 exorcists operating on behalf of the Catholic Church in Italy alone. Amorth also teaches bishops how to tell the difference between satanic possession…
My interview was with Reverend Andrew Booms who has been appointed by the Bishop of Saginaw to serve as the permanent priest for St. Michael Church in Port Austin. I decided to ask him questions about how he became a priest. There are many details I can learn from a priest. I never knew priests have so much to do from visiting the sick, to celebrating mass. There are three main issues I would like to discuss with Father Andy: his childhood, his career, and his typical day of work.…
This will not happen because we have the proper high priest, namely Jesus and his people are a holy and royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:4, 9). His sacrifice produced the perfect salvation. In any case, there are no Levites and no temple records to indicate who would be in the priestly succession. They were destroyed in AD 70 when General Titus, later Emperor Titus, took Jerusalem, killed the priests, but more importantly razed the temple to the ground and burnt the records. A bit like our Births, Deaths and Marriages Registries being bulldozed into the ground and every record, both paper and electronic, being shredded, burnt and…
