Melissa Etheridge Research Paper
"Don't let anyone tell you that you have to be a certain way. Be unique. Be what you feel", this was mentioned by Melissa Etheridge, a famous American signer who lives a life with cancer. Although she may look different due to the lost of her hair, she always celebrates her individuality. Melissa Etheridge and I have something in common; we're both unique in our own way. Ever since I was born, I was diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a disorder that stays with me for the rest of my life. It is my companion. I'm able to visualize the world differently than others. My imagination is beyond ordinary, and my curiosity is unlimited. I'm never afraid to challenge my teachers' ideas and take a stand for my own beliefs. Although many people view me differently, I believe that my uniqueness makes me stronger as an individual. …show more content…
During my Kindergarten year, I discovered a special talent that many of my friends didn't have, a talent of drawing. I enjoyed every moment of it, from sketching a tree to the enormous statue outside my schoolyard. My advantage of having ADHD helps me to have a high amount of imagination and an ability to think outside the box. During my art class in fifth grade, I was assigned to draw my friend. I was able to put every detail of my friend's face down onto the paper. My drawing was colorful and exceptional. Although many people think I have a disadvantage due to my disability, to me I'm honor to have

For example, I have a learning disability called auditory processing. Auditory processing makes it difficult for me to process verbal instructions or even to filter out background noise. With auditory processing, I have learned to advocate for myself in the classroom, at diving and in the other areas of my life. I’m a go-getter and will not back down if an obstacle is in my way like the extremely difficult front three and a half dive. I credit this attitude of overcoming to the many challenges that I must rise above in order to become a successful national and international diver.…

These disabilities drastically affect my ability to focus, especially on abstract concepts like math which require nuanced thinking and precision. ADHD also affects my organization skills, leaving me scatter-brained and forgetful. Leaves me with social anxiety and feelings of inadequacy, causing me to feel nervous about asking for help or clarification due to the (admittedly unfounded and ridiculous) fear I'd be thought of as "stupid" by my peers, which may have also played a role in my inadequate math grades. Looking back, I feel like I was and am capable of achieving more. I never used these disabilities as excuses for poor performance or justification for taking the "easy way out". My freshman year, I was placed in a "Study Skills" class as part of my IEP, but I felt like this was holding me back as a learner, giving me an excuse to slack off, and boxing me into a category as a "disabled person" who couldn't possibly progress. I was able to advocate for myself and convince my parents and my teachers that I no longer needed support services. I want nothing more but to be a productive member of society, to help inspire others who may be dismissed as lost causes due to their circumstances, and to develop and hone my knowledge into something that can change the world for the…

Before the meeting, I assumed that someone with a stage name like “Lady” (her given name is Stefani Joanne Germanotta) was going to be a bit standoffish—that’s the strategy employed by most nervous young musicians on the occasion of their first real interview, in any case. But I never thought she was going to actually be Lady Gaga. These days, very few artists play the media like Bob Dylan, or stay in character as Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh did in his early career. In the age of VH1’s Behind the Music, tabloid culture, and reality television, musicians are aware that they should show themselves to journalists in as much mundane detail as they can muster. “But Lady Gaga is my name,” she said, amazed that I would have thought otherwise. “If you…

Upon first hearing Sierra College's motto, “Dream, Learn, Do,” a strong urge to roll one's eyes ought to be suppressed. However, if its initial hokeyness is overlooked, the motto does provide practical significance. True, not all of us will meet out childhood dreams of traveling in space, or walking the red carpet, but how did those who fly to the moon and make summer blockbusters get where they are? The pop singer Lady Gaga has a career most young women would love to emulate. Gaga's success came from her dream to perform, her determination to learn her art, and the practice of that education and perseverance to actually do what she wanted with her life.…
