The main character of the story “Memento Mori” is Earl. The author does not really give a detailed physical description of Earl throughout the story. The only thing stated about his appearance is the thick scar on his face which starts under his ear and runs up into his hairline. Earl got this scar from the night his wife was attacked and killed. He also has a tattoo the starts on his wrist and goes up his arm ending above his chest. This tattoo is to help him remember the killer of his wife. The tattoo is of a message on his forearm and an arrow leading to his chest with a picture of the man’s face that killed his wife. Towards the end of the story you get a little bit more of a description of Earl. When he wakes up in a hotel room he is surprised to see that he is older now, losing his hair, and evenly tanned to where he cannot notice where his watch use to be on his wrist.
In this story the main character Earl has a disability. He has a brain injury which prevents him from remembering anything new after the injury. He is only ‘awake’ for 10-30 minutes at a time before he forgets everything and has to start over. Earl has to be reminded everyday about his wife being killed through notes and pictures he has left for himself. However, Earl does remember the face of the man who attacked and killed his wife. Earl leaves letters and notes to himself to convince and remind himself of his plan of revenge. Before his brain injury, Earl might have been the type of person to let it go and eventually forgive his wife’s attacker and let the police deal with it.
