The primary recreational opportunity in the planned project area is Keystone State Park which was created by the steel mills of Pittsburgh. Chavez Ravine is a modern day example of institutionalized racism against Chicanos on a smaller scale than the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Chavez Ravine was made up of low income Mexican Americans who were forced to live there because of discrimination in other parts of Los Angeles. Mike Davis, a Los Angeles based author, writes in his book that most of the original Spanish-speaking homeowners initially unwilling sell gave into greedy developers representing the city and its public housing authority. Through Spanish speaking agents, the homeowners were offered immediate cash payments for their homes. Homeowners that did not take advantage of the immediate cash payments were offered less for their home. Panic set in among the remaining homeowners.…
It's early October on the grounds of the University of Kansas where barren trees; swaths of dormant, beige grass; and the pale, limestone buildings have created a monochromatic tableau that looks like a picture in an old, yellowed newspaper. Amongst the landscape of what could look like cathedrals lies a building that brings many students to their feet in anticipation of what will happen. Indeed, arriving for a game at Allen Fieldhouse can feel like preparing to rummage through the dusty archives of college basketball. But after a 2005 renovation, there's nothing musty about the newly developed structure. And with one of the best teams in the NCAA holding court inside, Allen Fieldhouse is all about the traditions that…

Have you ever wondered what was it like being a soldier in Washington’s Army? Facing severe weather, imminent death, and sickness in the battlefield this is what happens in the American Revolutionary War when they fought over British taxation. If I were a soldier in Washington’s Army and I had the choice of leaving and getting away from suffering or either staying, having a chance to die I would leave. No, I would have quit due to severe weather, lack of supplies, and deaths and sickness.…

Have you ever been forced or bribed out of your own home? Did you ever feel so powerless? Many people in Los Angeles have felt that. The second-largest art museum in the country, the Art Institute houses treasures and masterpieces from around the globe, including a fabulous selection of both impressionist and post-impressionist paintings. The theme I decided to pick was called the Holiday Thorne room. The Holiday Thorne room has the most magnificent displays including descriptions of holiday objects that were labeled as historic from previous ownerships. Some artifacts took us all the way back to Germany and China which sparked the room for the holiday spirit. The 68 dollhouse-like rooms, built on a scale of one inch to one foot, display what rooms around the world looked like in different historical eras. The curator name was Lindsay Morgan, and said adding the Christmas decorations was a lot of work. Morgan says she spends months researching the holiday traditions for each room. Last year on NBC’s Today show, they had labeled the Art Institute’s most popular attractions. As I was absorbing the room’s beauty, I took note on how the rooms were specially made for holiday fineries that showcases historical traditions. Also they had offers on the window into seasonal festivities. New to the decorating tradition this year is the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) room. And, for the first time in 50 years, an original German Rococo room will be displayed in the same Thorne room.…

My fondest of a Disney park was a 2005 trip to Disneyworld with my wife and young daughter. During our stay we visited the parts of the park my daughter prefered at the time, which was mainly princesses and fairy tales. One of her favorite rides in the park was called “it’s a small world”, which is a boat ride consisting of models of little islands, boats, and little figures. She also loved seeing all the princesses and visiting them. Personally, I like all of the roller coasters and thrill. Overall we had an amazing stay and a pleasant experience.…
