Memory Atkins Poem Summary

In this poem, the author is describing a morning where she is baking with someone else and the kitchen becomes a mess. To others that might seem like a horrible clutter, but in the end, when she explains how everything is finally cleaned up, she states “let us never be rescued from this mess”. One literary study topic that this poem addresses is memory. The author is recollecting this time in her life where all she hoped for was if “a thickfruit tang/ sneaks through the wire screen/ and into the home of the scowly lady/ who lives next door”. A moment where she could look back and the uncontrollable messes were oddly the best part.
