Will you please be quiet please?
TASK 1: Write a paragraph that outlines your general observations of the male characters in “Will you please be quiet please?”
All the male character in Raymond Carver’s collection of short stories: “Will you please be quiet please.” seem to portray disconnection and neglect in their relationships with family, especially their wives. For example the reader can notice, the objectifying of the waitress (his girlfriend) by Rudy in “Fat”: “Rudy begins… though it is against my will.” Also in “Signal’s”, Wayne suggests he has lost touch from his wife Caroline, when he says: “ I don’t think he ever knew her.” Further more the male character in “Will you please be quiet please.” explore internal conflict, as they are unsure of their direction in life. An example is when Al from “ Jerry and Molly and Sam.”, expresses “ life had become a maze”, this suggesting the perplexity of Al’s current life. Also, Ralph in “Will you please be quiet please.” reflects backs saying his “goals were hazy.” In relation to self-conflict, most of the characters experience a change or desire to change their self-identity. Looking in a mirror is a symbolism that occurs in several of the stories portraying how these men are looking back at themselves, trying to comprehend who they are and what their intentions are. Bill, from “Neighbours” looks at himself in the mirror while dressed in his neighbour’s clothes, portraying his desire to revamp his life. This can also be comparable to Arnold in “ Are you a Doctor.” who looks in the mirror after every contact with Clara, possibly visioning a new life with her. Other observations that can be made are the contrasts that lie between the males and females in Carver’s stories. In many of the stories, the females seem to be in a more stable, higher position, occupationally and socially than their male partner. For example in “ They’re not your Husband”, the story begins
