Familial relationships can be quite complex when feelings are involved, and sometimes, people have the willingness and strength to re-adjust and end up with a strong and successful familial relationship. In Mark Haddon’s book, the curious incident of the dog in the night time the Boone family learns to adapt and alter their behaviour which allows them to go to great lengths in the near future as a family. He learns to re adjust due to Christopher’s needs and puts his son before himself. After Ed notices how bad he treated Christopher, he gets a grasp and realizes he has to make it up to him by buying him the one thing he dearly loves; dogs. “Then he rubbed the sides of his forehead with his fingertips, and he said, “You don’t have to say anything, not right now. You just have to think about it. And, um… I’ve got you a present. To show you that I really mean what I say. And to say sorry. And, because… well, you’ll see what I mean. Then he got out of the armchair and he walked over to the kitchen door and opened it and there was a big cardboard box on the floor and there was a blanket in it and he bent down and put his hands inside the box and he took a little sandy-coloured dog out”(Haddon 219) . Despite the fact that he has damaged his bond with Christopher, his natural love his son showcases him trying to have a stronger relationship with him. Subsequently, Ed’s relation with Christopher becomes stronger considering he now accepts Christopher and his way of thinking. His willingness to deal with him and learn what he wants in this complex situation is the way he re-adjusts with Christopher. To conclude, despite Christopher’s past of being unsociable and hard to handle, his ability to adapt and re adjust grants him to strengthen his familial relationships with both his parents.
After the Boone family goes on their long emotional journey, Judy, Ed and Christopher Boone are able to enhance their familial relationships. Their ability to re adjust to each other and their new surroundings allows them to all strengthen their relationships; Judy learns to put her son before herself; Ed learns to not take the easier route and try new things; and Christopher learns to cope on his own.
