Mental health
I have chosen this field of nursing as I find all the elements fascinating due to the different challenges I would have to face. Nursing is a very challenging and demanding career; and this field especially so, however I feel the rewards would be great and that I am ready to embark on this career. I am ready and very eager to accomplish this career where i can help and care for people to the best of my ability and becoming a mental health nurse would allow me to fulfill this ambition. A career in nursing requires people to be dedicated, reliable, trusting, caring people who are able to develop good relationships to their patients. These are skills i do have and they will make a genuine difference to different people’s lives, this will be done by assisting them and their families by showing support and giving them reassurance through difficult times when they …show more content…
are possibly at their most vulnerable.
A few of my family relative are in different areas of the health service which has given me an open minded knowledge of the different types of health services I could choose from and I have chosen mental health through my experience of voluntary work at a residential care home, where many service users had mental health disorders and specific care needs.
I have had work experience during school, college and voluntary work of different areas of the health sector. During this time I worked with young children and individuals with mental health conditions, this was exciting to see how different service users use different ways to communicate to each other and how the service workers had to use different techniques to help individuals in different activities.
These experiences have given me a real and practical understanding some of the challenges a mental health support worker has to contend with, but also a great sense of satisfaction to be found in caring for patients and being able to help them to achieve some balance in their day-to-day life and to maintain their
dignity.
The qualities I have are that I am a good listener, compassionate, good communication skills and have strong powers of empathy and understanding. I like to work as a team, working together, supporting each other through problems, but do also have the courage to trust my own judgment and make my own decisions. The variety in the job is very good, and the prospect of having the skills to help those who are seriously troubled is very rewarding. My responsibilities doing voluntary work have grown and I have had the opportunities to serve the needs of many patients. I have also been employed as a waitress and working behind a bar, this has been excellent for my interpersonal skills and communication with people I am not familiar with, and from all walks of life skills that are transferable to nursing.
My main interests are my voluntary work, socialising with my friends going to the cinema and spending time with my family, doing voluntary work is an interest because I can talk to new people, to listen to their stories and life stories that they tell and helping with their needs, seeing them smile and being happy makes it all worthwhile. I enjoy socialising with my friends and going to the cinema because you get to have fun and to have a laugh which is important. I feel that spending time with my family is also important as you get to keep the close bond that you have between each other, caring for each other and to help each other out. If I was successful in getting a place at university I know that I would give hundred percent to all my work.
I am very clear sighted about my ambitions, and I hope you will consider my application.
