Opening up about your mental health can be a very difficult thing to do. Everyday, many people face many different problems but are too afraid to admit it because of what people will think. People should be more open about the problems they face so they can get the help that they need to get better. Do you know someone with a mental health problem? Are you accepting of them? Do you have a mental health problem? Are you open to talking about it with other people? Today I’m going to try and persuade people to talk about their problems, mental health stigmas and discrimination people face, mental health in schools, mental health in teens, and some of the symptoms they deal with.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, here are some: “Talk openly about mental health, educate yourself and others, be conscious of language , encourage equality between physical and mental illness, choose empowerment over shame, be honest about treatment, let the media know when they’re being stigmatizing, and do no harbor self- stigma.” In my opinion, if you talk more openly, more people will come forward with the problems they are facing, and won’t do something drastic, which would have a lot of benefits. More accurate data and statistics and information on mental illnesses. Educating yourself on the mental health issue is so important. If you have a mental health issue, let people know about it because they can be very supportive and you’ll have someone to talk to about it. Educating yourself on it can be helpful because you’ll know what may trigger it, what you can do to try and help, and the many types of treatments that are out there. Being conscious of the language you use is also very important. Don’t use stigmatizing language. It can have a very negative effect on that person and make them think you don’t support them. A mental health condition is something that affects a person’s thinking, feeling, and behavior (Mental Health, 2016). The top five include: anxiety disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, dementia, and eating disorders. Obviously, depression is a top one too, but we’ll get into that later. Anxiety has many different symptoms. According to UPMC HealthBeat, they are things such as panic attacks, physical symptoms such as pain, nausea and headaches, nightmares, obsessive thoughts, fear of leaving the house. Now, just because you may exhibit one symptom, doesn’t necessarily mean you have anxiety. You should never self diagnose yourself.
