Leadership has been ranked as the 12th essential skill in the workplace out of 16 skills ( Employment skills for the 21st century workplace,2012). There are five leadership skills that are essential to acquire as a leader. These skills can help overcome complicated problems and issues that a leader could face on a daily basis. Skills such as collaboration rather than heroics and building and mending relationships; these can help with learning different ways to approach others in the organization as well as engage and motivate. When it comes to my career path I have always wanted to work with children but as I got older I developed a great passion for music. Music has always been around me, my dad was a big music buff. Since my father’s passing I feel like I have a special connection to him when I sing and listen to music. I’ve always been shy when it came to singing in front of an audience until I began going to Bethune-Cookman University. While I was enrolled there I joined a band and was singing in a local lounge every weekend and I loved it! Once I moved back home and enrolled in Georgia State I felt it was time to break out of my shell and truly begin to perform.…

I will also practice writing and making sure that what I am writing people can understand. I will learn the active listening skills, by listening to someone and then repeating what they just told me and asking questions, to make sure that I have understood what was said. I will take notes when I need to remember vital information that is given. I will let whoever is talking, tell what they are saying without interrupting them. I will also pay attention to the other person’s body language, since it can tell me, things that the person isn’t saying or how their mood really is. In order to learn the leadership skill, I will observe my supervisor and ask him questions about how he manages the department that he is in charge of. I will then practice leading and set an example for others. After learning and perfecting the skills needed for my career, and I start using them in my own daily life, I will be able to successfully give a verbal demonstration and point out a certain situation for each of my soft skills that I have used. Andre, a socially mobile 2010 graduate of Wellborn University, has been enjoying a successful software sales career in New York City. When I arrived, I stepped out of my car for Andre to help me park (raised in Arizona, my parallel parking skills are null). He happily greeted me as he took my keys and moved my driver’s seat all the way back. Being well over 6’ tall, he towered over me. On our way to his apartment building he expressed his excitement for my association with Lori before directing me to stop in my tracks and look ahead. In front of me was an unobstructed view of The Statue of Liberty. He gleefully told me that the view from the apartment’s patio was one of the best in the city. I interviewed him in the lobby of his posh apartment…

Eight weeks ago, I began a journey of self-evaluation and reflection that would shock the hell out of me. I would also learn that many of the leadership skills I thought I had mastered, I had not even begun to learn.…
