Mentoree's Funeral Reflection
The Mentoree was asked to conduct a funeral of one of the older members at Hickory Chapel Missionary Baptist Church that died on the twenty-first of this month. This was my first time conducting a funeral. I was given instructions and coached through the service. The Pastor/Mentor observed how I embraced the pulpit and followed the instructions provided by the family of the deceased.
I also had to perform the graveside committal and benediction. The Mentor prayed. Afterward, I was led to go to the family and embrace them and give short encouraging words along with the Pastor.
Insights I gained from required or supplemental reading this week (if applicable):

I thoroughly enjoyed this section of the book about emotional exhaustion. I discovered

The author, Edward Smither, opens with a question of how could a fifth-century African bishop be relevant to the twentieth-first century?” When it comes to mentoring spiritual leaders, Smither uses Aurelius Augustine or Augustine of Hippo, as an example of how to mentor others. Smither mentions that “so many pastors are in a struggle with isolation because they have no one to mentor or nurture their souls.”…

As of late more and more attention has been directed towards some unsavory police actions towards the black community. This is in direct relation to A Lesson before Dying. In A Lesson before Dying Jefferson, an uneducated black male is prosecuted for a crime he did not commit and thrown into jail for it. He receives a death sentence and loses all self-worth. In relation to current police brutality incidents some officers have been unjustly killing black citizens and not being sent to jail but instead on paid leave. Many never get convicted of their crimes, even with video evidence, but that only fuels protestors. This has led to a heavy divide between citizens and their police, similar to…

I was put on funeral detail at the end of my contract with the US Army. At the very beginning I felt as though it was more of a burden that I would carry instead of the honor it holds. I have seen many great men put in the ground six feet under and watched as their families wept. This tradition of honoring fallen soldiers will never be lost. The sound of “Taps”…

The Primary section of the service consisted or an Opening song, Greetings and Announcements, an Opening Prayer, Gospel, another Prayer, and Communion. The whole process took about an hour and a half. During the Opening song the atmosphere felt tense, everyone was very serious and it was easy to see the dedication in the crowd. It made me feel very excluded because my faith is not the same. During the greetings and announcements the tension broke and it felt more inviting while the Priest explained things that were happening in the church over the next week. The greetings were followed by an opening prayer, and then a reading from the Gospel. The same atmosphere of tension and focus returned. It seemed as though everyone other than me was possessed by the words of the priest. At this point two individuals in white robes with lit candles and baskets on polls began Collection for charity and the church. Growing up I went to a very small Baptist church where we just passed around a small basket for collections, so this process seems very overdramatic to me. After collections they started Communion where we had the option of being blessed by the priest, drinking the juice representing Christ’s blood, and eating the wafer representing Christ’s body. I would have guessed from the previous atmosphere that everyone would want to be part of this but only a handful of people participated. Mostly Parents with young children.…

" The Sculptor's Funeral", a short story by Willa Cather, emphasizes the behavior and idea of parochialism & provincialism. What's interesting is that this idea is shared by Harvey Merrick, the main character, as well as the townspeople who resent him for leaving. " Harve never was much account for anything practical and he shore was never fond of work" (Cather par. 56) Why is this? Could there be different levels of parochialism? One person may feel that home is where the heart is, but you must also explore the world around you. On the other hand, another individual may only recognize hometown pride in people who remain to live in the town in which they were born.…

The accusation process of a crime is often very tedious and at times misleading, but with careful analyzation the true culprit can be revealed. Such an instance occurs in Gabriel García Márquez's journalistic novel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, in which Santiago Nasar is indicted of having been the individual responsible for deflowering Angela Vicario prior to her arranged marriage to Bayardo San Roman. This accusation, which is initially stated by Angela Vicario herself, causes a chain of events which ultimately result in the murder of Santiago Nasar by Pedro and Pablo Vicario, Angela’s brothers. Through their actions, the twins act for honor with the intention of freeing their sister of her dishonorable past. After the murder, many townspeople…
