Mentoring In Nursing

Mentoring is a relationship between two individuals, one is well educated as well as experienced and the other is seeking for guidance. Mentoring takes place at any point of a person’s life, not only during nursing school but can also take place within an individual’s career. Patience is a major key when it comes to dealing with various patients, colleagues and especially students who are aiming towards becoming a nurse as well. Patience allows a mentor to have the ability to share their knowledge and skills. In some way, they may benefit from it. The role of coach or preceptor is not a lifelong relationship or commitment” (p. 209). To add, coaches and preceptors are roles that are considered temporary. A coach is considered task oriented and seeks to improve an individual’s performance. A preceptor’s duty is to introduce new employees their daily responsibilities, provide them with feedback so they seek improvement and show them where supplies are located. After orientation is completed, preceptor role has been met. A colleague is a person with whom one works with, either within the same or different department of area. However, colleagues may have different set of skills and ways of handling their job. In some cases, skills may not be as good and helpful for a work location. A friend is someone approachable when needed, however their personality will not perceive them as mentor if they have a negative
