I work on a hospital ward dedicated into looking after the elderly. A hospital ward is a health facility divided into separate units and are shared by patients who need a similar kind of care, ( farlex 2013). The name of the ward will be kept confidential. Confidentiality is a fundamental part of the nursing profession practice that protects human rights (NMC 2008).
A mentor is a guide who can help the mentee to find the right direction and who can help them to develop solutions to career issues. Mentors rely upon having had similar experiences to gain an empathy with the mentee and an understanding of their issues. Mentoring provides the mentee with an opportunity to think about career options and progress. (MentorSET 2008). The NMC (2008) say a NMC mentor is a registrant who, following successful completion of an NMC approved mentor preparation programme – or comparable preparation that has been accredited by an AEI as meeting the NMC mentor requirements – has achieved the knowledge, skills and competence required to meet the defined outcomes. A mentor is a mandatory requirement for pre-registration nursing and midwifery students.
The term Mentor originates from Homer’s epic the Odyssey where Mentor is asked to watch over Odysseus’s son, Telemachus, when the father leaves to fight in the Trojan War. Mentor’s role was to care for and educate Telemachus, (Level Playing Field Institute 2013). The role of the mentor is important in regards to the learning of the mentee. The knowledge, advice and resources a mentor shares can help the mentee gain knowledge and succeed with goals and targets. (Do It, 2013)
