Course Description: This course is an introduction to the history of the United States from European colonization of North America to the Reconstruction. It is also an introduction to ways historians look at the past and think about evidence. There are two main themes. One is to understand the origins of the groups known as European‐Americans, Native Americans, and African‐Americans. Far from timeless categories, these “groups” and their “cultures” were created through concrete interactions among people from Europe, Africa, and North America in the place that became the United States. The second theme is to understand how political, economic, and social institutions emerged in the United States during this period. These require an assessment of what “democracy” actually meant as a series of practices by participants within the context of an economy that depended on slave labor and often‐violent land acquisition, as well as the subsequent implication of such interaction on social institutions.…

    Mercutio

Mercutio is one of the most unique characters in Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet". His language is always powerful and imaginative. He represents many different things in the play and holds an important role. Both of these categories will be explored in this essay, among other things. First of all, Mercutio is Romeo's friend. He is neither Montague, nor Capulet. Therefore, he has not been born into a feud and really has no side. However, his bond with Romeo does make him associated with the Montagues.…

Mercutio was a very strong and important character in William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio had two main roles. He was not only the Prince's kinsman, but also Romeo's best friend and companion. His infamous lines and eccentric speeches live on in the hearts of all Shakespeare fans.

Mercutio was portrayed as an eccentric, intelligent and loyal friend to Romeo. His language was full of sexual innuendo and allusions to legend and myth. Consider this quote from Act 2, Scene 1, "an open et caetera, thou art a paper'in pear!" This quote is full of reference to sex. Or consider this one from Act 1, Scene 4, "O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you. She is the faerie's midwife and she come in shape no bigger than an agate' s stone." Both these lines were addressed toward Romeo in hopes of sparking up his spirits. These lines are not only examples of Mercutio's vulgarity, but also of his intelligence and wit. Mercutio was also a very loyal friend to Romeo. In Act 2, Scene 4, Mercutio said, "Ah, that same pale hard-hearted wench, that Rosaline. Torments him so, that he will sure run mad."

So, if Mercutio was such a strong character, then why did Shakespeare kill him off? Although his death was a disappointment to "Mercutio fans," we must think as a writer and look ahead to the end of this tragedy. Perhaps it would be too difficult to have him reconcile with the Capulets after Romeo and Juliet's tragic deaths. Perhaps he was too strong a character to change his ways and make amends with his foes. Even so, with Mercutio's wit and grace, I would have enjoyed reading another of his long speeches.

Alas, the fact remains that Shakespeare terminated Mercutio's character on purpose. Thankfully he was an integral part of the story bringing wit, intrigue, and humor to the stage and for that we appreciate…

    Maquiladoras

In 1965, the Mexican government launched the Border Industrialization Program (BIP), better known as the Maquiladora Program. This program's original purpose was to absorb the excessive amount of unemployed people who resided along a narrow-band of land on the Mexican side of the American-Mexican border. Tens of thousands of Mexicans were returning from the United States upon the termination of the Bracero program that allowed Mexican agricultural workers to work legally in the United States. It was also hoped that this program would help develop the Mexican manufacturing base and lead the transfer of technology to Mexico. Over time the Maquiladora concept evolved into nearly tax-free zones tapping into seemingly limitless foreign investment of multinational companies looking for low labour costs, and the Mexican government finally permitted that they could be established anywhere in Mexico. Maquiladora means "apparel for export," reflecting the early assumption that most factories would produce textiles. Nearly 50 years after the initial setup of the Maquiladoras, the production is much more diversified, for example, textile represents 28% of the production whereas electronics represent 16%, other manufacturing 15% and furniture assembly 11%.…

A fingerprint is an impression of the ridges on a person’s finger. By inking a person’s finger, these can be recorded on paper and compared with fingerprints left at the crime scene. Since no two fingerprints are the same, this is a valuable way of identifying a person. Fingerprints are formed in full detail before birth and remain unchanged throughout life unless they are affected by a deep seated injury.…

The President began his SONA by recalling how, nearly four years ago, a group of well-meaning people persuaded him to run in the 2010 presidential elections, assuring him that while serious problems hound the country, they expected him only to start laying the groundwork at least for permanent resolution of those problems. They assured him they would help him face the challenges all the way. He hesitated, but knew that he wasn’t raised to evade responsibility, and he could not live with himself if he did that. Thus, he said, began his long, difficult journey. He also took pains to thank the people, referring to them again as “ang aking mga boss,” for giving him affirmation in the recent May 2013 elections, by signaling their approval of the directions he was taking, by electing nine of his candidates to the Senate. Some are already saying that while he is currently the clear frontrunner to replace PNoy in 2016, Vice-President Jejomar Binay’s less than stellar record in practicing good governance could cause much worry among the business and international sector which can hamper our continued economic growth. 2016 is not just about fighting against corruption. It’s been three years now, since we elected PNoy with an overwhelming mandate. Up until now, he still continues to enjoy very good trust ratings with the latest SWS survey showing him with a net satisfaction rating of +64 which is unprecedented for a Philippine President that has served more than half of his term. While the first 3 years of his term have been aimed at promoting good governance and his anti-corruption agenda, the next three years should be aimed towards fulfilling the other half of his campaign promise which is eradicating poverty in our country. Let us remember that one major reason why he was elected into power was that our country was coming off a decade that was marred with rampant graft and corruption thus, the Filipino people elected PNoy based on…
