Diet pills have become a very popular supplement to assist people in weight loss. However, diet pills raise many concerns: are they safe, do they really work, and are the results permanent? In “Health Controversy Surrounds Diet Pills,” Robyn Melamed effectively employs logos through factual information, establishes ethos by citing trustworthy sources, and initiates pathos by relaying touching stories to inform Americans about the risks and benefits of taking diet pills. The author shows the readers both sides of the controversy surrounding diet pills by alerting the readers to a tragic story and by sharing a very successful weight loss story. She also uses reputable sources such as the FDA, Cantox Health Universities, and University Health services to emphasize the effects of ephedrine. Lastly, Melamed provides the readers with facts and statistical information to gain the reader’s trust.…

These days it’s hard to turn on the television or surf the internet, and not be bombarded with a celebrity sponsored commercials, or the many pop up advertisement advertising how one can lose 20 – 30 pounds in a matter of weeks. The manufactures of these products would love for us to believe it’s as simple as taking a pill, or participating in one of the many new fad diets. But if it were as simple as swallowing pill or just dieting then why has the obesity rate in the United States almost quadrupled in the past quarter century (Meich, et al)? It’s because the main problems like poor family support and influence, and the living of sedentary lifestyle can’t be corrected by ingesting a pill.…

Strict FDA guidelines to the research, development, testing, sale, and consumption have a direct impact on the supply curve. Drug manufacturers invest years and millions of dollars in research and development of new drugs and own long-lasting patents on new drug production. Once these drugs have passed the various levels of FDA approval, drug manufacturers market these to consumers who begin making the demand curve. Limited supply, regulatory compliance, and research costs put upward pressure on price.…

Finding long-term drugs at low prices has been a dilemma for many individuals in the general population. However, these set prices—more often than not—are usually seen as obscene and unorthodox due to their low supply compared to such high demand, rendering a deficit in quantity demanded for a large number of consumers. As a conflict, contrary to what many would hope for, a vast number of drugs are not extensive which then cause the pricing methods to be rigorous. More importantly, several pricing methods were then implemented as a result of diligent regulation of prices such as: value-based pricing and government acquisition (Chen, 2017). Such a dilemma is that of Spark Therapeutics Inc. and Sofia Priebe, a 14 year old girl that has been diagnosed…

The Cambridge Sciences Pharmaceuticals (“CSP”) is an international healthcare company that had completed successful clinical trials for its newest weight loss prescription drug, Metabical. With the final FDA approval expected, Metabical’s launch was set for January 2009 and a clear marketing communications strategy needed to be in place before the launch. With 10 years and $400 million spent on research and development, it was imperative that CSP positions Metabical correctly in the marketplace. Optimal segmentation, targeting, and positioning were important factors to consider in order to ensure that the launch as well as post-launch marketing of the drug yielded strong sales and product longevity.…

Metabical is a prescription drug produced by Cambridge Sciences Pharmaceuticals (CSP) for weight loss, which was the first and only prescription drug to obtain FDA approval. The drug was developed to help aid people in the overweight segment to lose 10 to 30 pounds. Barbara Printup is the marketing director in charge of selecting a price for the new prescription drug. In a study CSP did with Metabical, people with a body mass index (BMI) of 28 to 30 had an average weight loss of 26 pounds over a 12 week period. At the same time, people with a BMI of 25-28 had an average weight loss of 15 pounds. This study found the new prescription drug to be useful and effective. Through research, Printup decided to target female consumers in the 35 to 65 age range with a college education. Metabical was also basing pricing and packaging compared to their main competitors in this particular market. CSP wanted to base their new product comparably to Alli, but felt Metabical could be priced at a premium due to the need of a prescription to get the drug, and the fact that they were the only FDA approved weight loss drug on the market. Pricing was a main concern with this product and several scenarios were run to try and project and forecast where the pricing would make the best return on investment (ROI). The packaging was also something Printup had to consider when preparing this product. The main issue is how to break up the 12 week supply, if at all, to get the best sales results.…

Although marketing scholars often seek to contribute new knowledge that is applicable across industries, some industries have unique characteristics that require industry-specific knowledge development. The authors argue that this requirement applies to the life sciences industry, defined as companies in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and therapeutic medical devices. Marketers in the life sciences industry face novel and unique challenges along eight decision areas in therapy creation, therapy launch, and therapy promotion. In therapy creation, they face therapy pipeline optimization, innovation alliance formation, and therapy positioning decisions. In therapy launch, they face global market entry timing and key opinion leader selection decisions. Therapy promotion mostly revolves around sales force management, communication management, and stimulating patient compliance. The authors qualify these decision areas according to their practical importance and academic potential. The article derives preliminary generalizations and propositions from prior research and practice and steers further research in specific directions. The authors believe that marketing of the life sciences offers a fertile area for further research because, among other things, its potential impact transcends any problems typically investigated by marketing scholars.…

Metabical is revolutionary product and forecasted to be the first FDA approved prescriptive drug for overweight individuals with weight-loss goals. The current weight-loss drugs can be classified as prescriptive drugs or over the counter remedies. OTC drugs were not as a popular among overweight individuals due to lack of regulation and safety concerns.
