Metal and Non-Metal
WHAT IS METAL?

A metal is a chemical element that is a good conductor of both electricity and heat. Metals are malleable and ductile and have lustrous appearance. They have moderate to high physical constants and high tensile strength. Metals are further divided into two main groups - ferrous and non ferrous metals.

TYPES OF METAL

• FERROUS METAL

These are metals which contain iron. They may have small amounts of other metals or other elements added, to give the required properties. All ferrous metals are magnetic and give little resistance to corrosion.

Example: Wild steel, Carbon steel, Cast iron, Wrought iron, Stainless steel

• NON-FERROUS METAL

These are metals which do not contain any iron. They are not magnetic and are usually more resistant to corrosion than ferrous metals. Examples: aluminum, copper, lead, zinc and tin.

WHAT IS NON METAL?

Non-metal is a term used in chemistry when a classifying the chemical elements, form negatively charged ions or anions. Non-metal also forms covalent bonding between non-metals.

TYPE OF NON METAL

• CERAMIC

A ceramic is an inorganic, non-metallic solid prepared by the action of heat and subsequent cooling. Example ceramics are used in the manufacture of knives, clay pot, and plate.

Ferrite- These types of magnets magnets are made of a sintered composite of powdered iron oxide and barium/strontium carbonate ceramic. Because of the cheap prices of the materials and manufacturing methods, inexpensive magnets like this (or non- magnetized ferromagnetic cores, for use in electronic component such as radio antennas, for example) of different shapes can be easily mass produced. These magnets are non-corroding, but can be brittle and must be treated like other ceramics for it to be efficient.…

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. The proportion of carbon to iron varies the hardness of the alloy, the ductility and the tensile strength. Steel can be made stronger than pure iron however is also less ductile. If steel is soft, malleable and ductile it is used for sheet steel, nails and wires. If it is hard and moderately ductile, it is used for railway tracks and axles. If it is very hard with a very low malleability and is brittle, it is often used for axe heads, tools and high-strength wires.…
