Metal Work Definitions
Research Task
1. Provide an illustration and a description of the use of the following marking out tools; steel rule, scriber, engineers square, combination set, odd legs callipers and spring dividers.
Steel Rule: is used for measuring straight rule lines, because of its straight edge. It can also be used as a guideline when lying out lines and also for cutting. Practical uses for the steel rule are a guide to scribe or draw a straight line and the straight edge can also test the accuracy of a flat surface. Graduations on the ruler are usually millimetres and half millimetres. To be accurate, the rule must be in good condition with flat, straight and true edges. A steel rule comes in two versions, rigid and flexible.
Scriber: is made from hardened steel with sharp points at each end. Lines drawn with a scribe are far more accurate than a line drawn with a pencil or pen. A scriber is used to make sharp, clearly defined lines on metal. An Engineers Square consists of a metal blade set at 90 degrees to a solid metal block (the stock). Practical uses of an engineer square is a guide for a scriber when marking out lines at right-angles to the edge of the work and a guide to setting up or checking work to see if it’s squared. It can also be used for marking perpendicular lines onto a work piece. A Combination Set is a set of equipment combining the functions of protractor, engineer square, steel rule, Centre finder, level rule, and scriber. Odd legs Callipers: Odd leg callipers are used to draw lines parallel to an edge. They consist of one calliper leg and a leg with an adjustable scriber point. Odd leg callipers can also be used to lie out the centre of round stock. This is particularly useful when marking sheet metal. A Spring Divider is used for measuring distances between two points, transferring or comparing measurements directly from a rule, or for scribing an arc, radius, or circle onto a work piece. A spring divider consists of two sharp
