For years it has been a patriarchal society within American culture. In recent years the tides have shifted and women have been taking up jobs and positions only men used to hold. Being a man has a different definition now. Historically, societal pressures of certain roles have been targeted towards women. Men now fall under those same pressures and gender roles are becoming ever so more blended due to equality of women.
In the past men were viewed as superior to women, and women took a more submissive role. Women have been and are being judged by their clothing and body figure. “There is no unmarked woman...”. Whereas being a woman has opened up more opportunities because the man has taken up naturally feminine roles. Which has enabled women to pursue success and contribute to society. When you define a man he is the one who will fix the car, take the trash, and do the handy work. Although that still exists today there are so many opportunities for both men and women in the opposite gender role. “But the men I see in these posters with their stern, humorless looks remind me of no one I know here.” (Ehrlich) Ehrlich explains in this quote that the men she knows are much different than the ones depicted in advertising making the point that men are not as society depicts them. Today we have stay at home dads and executive moms where half a century ago that was unacceptable. As this form of equality is a great contribution, some still view gender roles the same as in the past.
Gender roles are becoming blended more and more each day. Society has been forever changing what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman.
