“We have found on the contrary, that metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action” (Lakoff&Johnson 3). We use them in our everyday, they are omnipresent, but we are unconscious about them. Metaphors can be extraordinary instead of an ordinary language because they govern our mundane life. In other words they make us complete in a way that it helps us express ourselves. With metaphors we are able to connect and talk to others it is how we function and get around in the world. In general everyday consist of something metaphorical, what we do, what we say, etc. It is like an automatic system we have because we use them for almost everything. “We found that most of our ordinary conceptual system is metaphorical in nature” (lakoff&Johnson 4). Just a certain word can be interpreted differently because each person has a kind of different conceptual system. Metaphors are also part of thinking and acting not only language. Metaphors can be found in poems, literature, music, comics etc. They can be non-linguistic and they can be visual metaphors. Banksy’s “there is always hope” is a piece of art that portrays different types of meanings. It is a visual art piece, that people have their own ways of portraying what the meaning of that art is. Every person can interpret that image as they please because no concept can structure how we think about other concepts. How i interpreted this art piece is that the red shaped balloon symbolizes love or love lose, peace, hope, or dreams, but is the girl trying to reach that love and peace or is she letting it go. The words written down are “there is always hope” and they are written down in white in the middle of a dirty/ dark background, that can also represent that there can be hope in dark times. Is the girl trying to get back the love or hope she lost? Is he letting go of her dreams? It's a universal feeling. For example, sometimes we get hurt or something drastically happens in our life that we lose hope completely that it takes us a while to gain a little piece of it back. All these interpretations is what makes it metaphorical because we don't really know the true meaning of it and we can't really explain it, but somehow with metaphors we are able to.
