English as spoken and written by Malaysians nowadays really isn’t as standardised as one might expect it to be. The language itself which admittedly is not the native language for any of us Malaysians is not used in proper conduct as by the native speakers. We adapted a language which incidentally is considered one of the most important languages of which one needs to be able to speak in, yet we haven’t been able to use it as it should be, that is by following the rules of a language, the grammatical rules and actually speaking the language without mixing it with any other lingo. There is a need to improve the standard of English in Malaysia. In par with that, the Malaysian government needs to do its part as well. Actually, there are several ways the government can improve the standard of English. Of course, the first should be an attempt to improve the standard of English at school level. The Ministry of Education (MOE) is in a great position to do just that. Their job would be to improve the methods of teaching for English subject at schools. Usually English teachers tend to have a good standard when it comes to their language yet the teaching methods used by them are not the same as a natively English speaking teacher would use to teach his students the language. Therefore the MOE should research on that to determine the best method to teach English and train the Malaysian English teachers to apply the method at school. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has its own role to play as well. The MOHE should encourage English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for students at the higher learning institutions to improve their command of the language. MOHE should also include the option of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for varsity students to rate their standard of English before they move on to working field. Therefore, they will work extra hard to level their standard of
