Case # 4 –Nucor Corporation
NOTE: This is the fourth (of five) graded, hand-in cases/ assignments and each case/ assignment will be worth:
10% of your final grade
Review the background material (in the casebook) about the case:
Nucor Corporation and, answer only the following three questions:
1) Rolled steel is a commoditized product. Commoditized products are extremely difficult to differentiate and distinguish (in terms of marketing and sales methods) from your competitor’s products. Pick only one of the following strategic dimensions and thoroughly explain why you would use it to differentiate your product:
i) Quality of the product ii) Applications for your products iii) After-sales service or, iv) Industry leadership in the application of cost-saving methodologies
2) How can a corporate CEO and the company’s senior executive team, drive a company to greater accomplishments if the company’s use of production technology, is the single greatest determining factor in the company’s success?
3) What particular leadership skills and core competencies do you think an enterprise must possess if it intends to be successful as an industry follower rather than being a “first-mover” in the application of new productive methods, in a particular industry.
Each of the five assignments/ cases that you will hand in during the semester must be answered without any reference to any internet sources, your classmates’ work (or the work of previous classes) or any other materials (except the textbook and the casebook). If any cases/ assignments are determined to be plagiarized, then, the case/assignment will be graded as 0%. Your papers will be graded upon your ability to reason, make coherent arguments and produce thorough analysis, given the assigned questions.
Each student’s individually prepared assignment will be physically submitted at the beginning of class on:
